ENGLISH FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE GRADE 12 PAPER 3 JUNE 2010 MARKS: 100 TIME: 2½ HOURS INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION 1. This paper consists of Section A: Composition (50) Section B: Transactional Writing (30) Section C: Shorter Writing (20) 2. Answer each Section on a new page. 3. Number the answers according to the numbering system used in the paper. 4. You must plan, edit and proofread your essay. The planning must appear BEFORE the final essay. 5. Plan your responses and write rough drafts before writing out the final versions of you answers. 6. A planning must be clearly indicated as such. Neatly cross out all plans and rough drafts. 7. Re-read your work carefully and correct any errors before you hand in the answer book. 8. You are strongly advised to spend approximately 80 minutes on Section A, 40 minutes on section B and 30 minutes on section C. 9. Do NOT use memorised responses. 10. Pay attention to spelling, choice of words, grammar, punctuation and pragraphing. 11. Write neatly and legibly. 12. Write in the language in which you are being assessed. SECTION A: CREATIVE WRITING

QUESTION 1

 Write an essay of between 250 and 300 words (approximately 1 to 1½ pages) on ONE of the following topics.  Write down the number and title of your essay correctly. Supply your own title if one has not been given.  You are advised to spend approximately 80 minutes on this section.

1.1 There is no time. OR 1.2 You feel that more should be done for the AIDS orphans in the community. Discuss what you think can be done and why it should be done. OR 1.3 The most valuable piece of advice my mother has given me… OR 1.4 Abortion should not be allowed. Do you agree? OR 1.5 Marches through cities should be banned. Write an essay in which you give the arguments for and against this statement.

1.6 Look at the following picture and write an essay on a topic that comes to mind. Give your essay a suitable title.

 Respond to ONE of the following transactional writing tasks.  The body of your response should be between 120 and 150 words (approximately 12-15 lines.)  Write down the number and the heading of the text you have chosen to write.  Pay particular attention to language, register and audience.  You are advised to spend approximately 40 minutes on this section.

2.1 Write a letter to a friend inviting him or her to a celebration. OR 2.2 Write the dialogue between a mother and her teenage daughter. The mother is giving the daughter some advice. OR 2.3 You receive the award for matric of the year. Write a speech in which you recall the highlights of your year. OR 2.4 Write a report about a theft that occurred at your school. OR 2.5 Write a letter in which you apply for a job as advertised.
