Martha Lee Cain Tranby Music Enrichment Fund

History of the Martha Lee Cain Tranby Music Enrichment Fund

Martha Lee Cain Tranby, a Kansas City, Missouri resident for more than fifty years, was a high school music teacher who also gave private piano lessons, played the organ at her church, and was a choir director for two other churches. She was a charter member of the Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity chapter at the University of Kansas City (now the University of Missouri- Kansas City), was the chapter’s first president, and was a member for 58 years. She had a deep belief in the power of music to affect people’s lives for the better.

Although she was a person of modest means, careful planning allowed her to establish the Martha Lee Cain Tranby Music Enrichment Fund in 1991. The purpose of the fund, which is managed by the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, is “to promote, inspire, foster, encourage, assist with and engage in, either alone or with others, the promotion of music education, composition, performance or any other music endeavor by individuals, groups or institutions.” She envisioned a fund that would assist people in every field of music endeavor, from scholarships for music camps or music educational institutions; to preparations for performances, conducting or composition; to the purchase of musical instruments and work in the field of acoustics. Her foresighted estate planning and insurance meant that, after her death in October 2004, her Fund grew to more than $1 million.

Previous beneficiaries of the Martha Lee Cain Tranby Music Enrichment Fund have included the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra (in an educational project with the Paseo Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts), the Youth Symphony (for travel to Spain), the Kansas City Chorale, Music/Arts Institute scholarship students, the Kansas City String Quartet Program, a University of Missouri-Kansas City piano student for participation in the International Liszt Piano Competition in Poland, a student for a scholarship to complete a master of music degree in organ performance, the William Jewell College Hymn Festival dedicating its new pipe organ, Summerfest, Friends of Chamber Music and the Declarations of Independence (the community chorus of Independence, Missouri).

Grants are restricted to fund the production or presentation of music performances. Grant applications are submitted to a Selection Committee designed by the Board of Trustees of the Fund. The Selection Committee considers applications submitted by the deadline of February 15, and makes recommendations to the Board of Trustees for grants or scholarships to projects or students that will benefit the greater Kansas City metropolitan area. The Selection Committee may schedule auditions and interviews. Inclusion of recordings is required for individual scholarship applicants only and grant applicants may include recordings or videotapes, although it is not required.
