IB Group 4 Project Rube Goldberg Project

Objective: To design and build a Rube Goldberg machine to light a light bulb.

Design specifications: Your machine must  Involve at least six energy transformations. Strive to include at least one chemical transformation  Operate safely  Occupy the volume defined by the area of a standard lab table and the space above and below the table. Each group will be assigned to a table

Be sure to bring: Each group is allowed to bring in ONE paper grocery bag of additional items you think might be useful for building your machine. IB Group 4 Project Temperature Mapping

Above is a classic temperature map of the United States. You will see that it consists of isothermal lines (lines along which the temperature is the same), and, colored shading from violet (cooler) up the color spectrum to red (warmer).

Objective: To gather surface temperature data with an Infrared Temperature Gun and use them to create a temperature map.

Process Specifications: You can • Select a subject that is living or non-living, small or large, indoors or outdoors. • Decide to investigate how variable y affects the temperature map of x, where your product is a number of maps that could be compared. • Make a quality computer map or a three-dimensional map. • All maps will be shared with the other temperature mapping groups. Be prepared to discuss precision and accuracy issues regarding data collection and map preparation.

Be sure to bring: A hair dryer, paper towel rolls, cardboard, digital camera, devices (cable, card) to import pictures into a laptop, and your laptop (if you have one). IB Group 4 Project Paper-and-Glue Construction

Objective: To give paper destined for the recycle bin new life by designing and building something with it. On the day of the project, we will tell you the intended end user of your paper item.

Design specifications: Your item must:  Be made out of 30 sheets of used copy paper and a glue stick.  Do what it is supposed to do.  Have a safe construction.  Not require any external support (from wall, ring stand, etc.)  Occupy no more than the volume defined by the area of a standard lab table and the space above and below the table. Each group will be assigned to a table.  All paper-and-glue construction projects will be photographed and documented for sharing with the other paper-and-glue groups.

Be sure to bring: A digital camera, devices (cable, card) to import pictures into a laptop, and your laptop (if you have one). IB Group 4 Project Cardboard Chair Challenge

Objective: To design and build a fully functional chair using only cardboard.

Design specifications: Your item must:  All chair parts must be made from the provided corrugated cardboard.  You may only use no more than two sheets of cardboard, each 4’2” x 5’7” (or approximately 40 square feet) to make all parts of your final chair.  No adhesives or non-cardboard “connectors” of any type may be used to make or assemble your chair.  The chair must have “back” for sitter to rest against.  The chair must support a person of at least 150 pounds in normal use.

Be sure to bring: A digital camera, devices (cable, card) to import pictures into a laptop, your laptop (if you have one), and SNACKS!
