Captain
Must have proficiency in basic ship handling, Z-Drive Tractor Tug with knowledge and experience in harbor assist operations and towing; advanced escort maneuver experience is preferred. Should be knowledgeable on the operation and general maintenance of bridge electronics and systems, deck machinery and cordage, and all other equipment related to the operation of the vessel. Must be a technical, self-motivated individual capable to take responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the vessel and systems.
Daily job tasks include:
Operating vessels safely and efficiently. Ensuring the tug maintains a constant state of readiness. Vessel Security Officer. Acts as Vessel Safety Officer. Supervising and training crew members. Maintaining vessel logs and timekeeping records. Providing guidance and leadership for crew members. Motivate, coach and develop safety and environmental protection policies and procedures. Overseeing the daily maintenance and repairs. Watch-standing and record-keeping. Assisting engineers with fuel, lube and ballast operations. Surveying, troubleshooting and correcting system failures in conjunction with engineering. Ensuring vessel compliance with regulatory requirements of USCG, ABS, EPA, Port and local rules as well as International Law.
Robust interpersonal skills are expected for living in close quarters aboard the vessel. The Captain is responsible for the proper training, turnover and watch-keeping of the Relief Captains or Mates. The Captain reports to the Port Captain or Operations Manager.
Credential Requirements:
Valid TWIC and Merchant Mariner Credential. USCG Master of Towing Vessels, USCG Master of Motor Vessels 500 Gross Registered Tons upon Near Coastal Waters; 1600 GRT upon Oceans is preferred. Radar Observer, unlimited. Basic and Advanced Marine Fire Fighting. STCW ’95 Endorsements applicable to MMC rating and scope of license.
Experience and Qualifications
United States Citizen. High School Diploma or GED. Must possess a valid state issued Operator’s License. 5 years of experience as Captain, Relief Captain or Mate. Maritime Academy Graduate preferred. Z-Drive Tractor Tug proficiency and experience. Knowledge of local waterways and operations is preferred. Knowledge of IMO-ISM Safety Management Systems and HSSEQ maritime practices. Knowledge of USCG and ABS, DNV or other classification society, rules and regulations. Computer, organizational and communications skills. Ability to work well under pressure and manage crew members. Strong attention to detail.
