Barrow College and Career Academy Project September 2012 Quarterly Report

MISSION & GOALS The mission of Barrow College and Career Academy is to provide career-focused educational opportunities that prepare all students with academic, life, and work skills to successfully complete post- secondary education and compete in the 21st century workforce.

GOALS Goal I: To prepare students for entry into post-secondary education and/or the workforce. Goal II: To prepare students for the workforce to support economic development. Goal III: To strengthen business, community, and post-secondary partnerships for sustainability.

NEEDS The Chamber of Commerce – Workforce Development committee is partnering with the BCCA to develop a continuous needs assessment plan. Lisa Maloof, Winder Campus Dean, is working with CTAE Directors, Pam McGee to align offerings at the BCCA and LTC to reduce duplication and increase dual enrollment opportunities.

PARTNERSHIPS

The Chamber of Commerce – Workforce Development committee is partnering with the BCCA to not only develop a continuous needs assessment plan, but to also develop a plan to recruit business partners and an overall marketing strategy for the BCCA. The Workforce Development committee has invited Leah Felcher (Ford PAS) to speak at a November 14th meeting about community partnerships and beginning the Ford PAS – Next Generation efforts.

WORK READY No action at this time.

BUDGET No action during this quarter.

Marketing Marketing the BCCA is a standing item on the Workforce Development Committee. Dr. Wanda Creel (BCCS Superintendent) presented updates to Winder Rotary on September 13, 2012. The highlight of the presentation was to share details of the collaborative efforts between Lanier Technical College and the Barrow County School System. The POND final site plan was presented (See below).

Continuous Improvement Cycle No action at this time.

Construction

LTC and BCCS continued to meet with POND, the site planning company, to determine placement of facilities on the land. Meetings dates are as scheduled: July10, July 24, August 7, September 1, and September 11. The site plan was completed September 11th.

Architect selection process began in August, 2012. On September 25 the architect proposals were evaluated and the findings will be presented to the Board of Education at the October meeting. GOVERNANCE & LEADERSHIP The BCCA Governance Board met on July 31st. Agenda items included: Information Items: - Review Quarterly Report (Reported to TCSG) – June, 2012 - Land Transfer - 20 acres to Lanier Technical College - Reports from Career Academy visits and contacts - Pam McGee - Other grants - Race To The Top – Venture grant - Ed Morrison Actions Items: Determine format of Quarterly Meetings and Reports - Discuss Steering Committee goals for 2012 *Determine route to establish Board of Directors and By Laws - committee *Develop a plan to increase business partnerships and commitments - committee *Finalize Career Pathways – continuous needs assessment – committee *Engage Ford PAS for professional development plan – Pam McGee *Increase public awareness through marketing strategies (Name and logo) For example: Pathways to future success! Focus on the Future! Pathways to future success) *Recruitment - Teams from each middle and high school (Grad coaches, advisement and CTAE leaders– for seamless transition) Next Steps: - Architect selection by Board of Education and begin construction - Begin non-profit application process - 501 (3)(c)

TIMELINE The budget for the cash portion of the grant was reviewed at the July 31, 2012 Governance Board meeting. Facility site plan meetings were held from June-September.

CAREER & COLLEGE FOCUS Lisa Maloof, Winder Campus Dean, is working with CTAE Directors, Pam McGee to align offerings at the BCCA and LTC to reduce duplication and increase dual enrollment opportunities. Meetings have been held on a regular basis (Wednesday mornings – 7:30-8:30).

GRADE LEVELS Enrollment will be open to 9th-12th when the BCCA opens in 2014.

By-Laws and structure of Board of Directors (Governance Board) was an agenda item on the July 31st Governance Board meeting.

CYCLE IMPROVEMENT No action at this time.

CHARTER SCHOOL LAW April, 2011, the Barrow County School System Charter, which includes the BCCA, was approved by the State DOE.
