Lesson Plan Summary Students will interact with an on-line tutorial and quiz developing their understanding of how to find the main idea of literature. Students will be able to display their understanding by selecting a piece of literature from the provided books, and complete the cause and effect concept map.

Learning Objectives

Students will participate in an on-line tutorial, and begin reading a text. Students will then be required to complete the concept map by filling in the book’s main ideas with supporting details.

Assessment Instrument

Students' progress and understanding will be assessed with a student-teacher conference. In which I will be looking for a description of "the main idea" in their own words, how to identify a supporting detail.

Students will be assessed with their appropriate completion of the concept map below.

Prerequisite Skills

Required prerequisites are slight reading fluency, and capability to read selected text to find the main idea.

Procedures Hook/Anticipatory Set: Introduce main idea strategies. Model strategies for picking out the main idea. During individual centers allow students to work on the online tutorial and quiz. During DEAR time (Drop Everything And Read) allow students to read a selected text to find the main idea & supporting details with the concept map.

Closure: Concept map will be handed in after the text is finished (allow one week to read the text) for assessment.

Accommodation Options ELL / Special Needs Spanish texts will be provided in the selection for the ESOL students. Students Highly-Capable Students Students that finish early will be allowed to read another text of their personal choice and submit another concept map for extra credit, or assist a struggling reader with their selected text.

Integrating the Learning Goals from Egbert’s SLwT “What is the Main Idea?” Lesson for 4th Grade

Learning Goal How this Lesson Addresses this Goal Critical Thinking Students will use higher-level critical thinking skills through this lesson in (Ch 4) response to their observations and experience with the online tutorial and quiz and apply that to their activity with a real text.

Problem-solving Students will use problem-solving strategies while configuring information (Ch 6) read from their text to complete the concept map with creative thinking and flexibility.
