Moon Webquest Directions (Answer all items on your Webquest Answer Sheet) Task One: The Phases of the Moon

(A) Moon Phase Simulation 1. Click HERE to observe a simulation about our Moon and its many phases. 2. Begin by pausing time, clicking on Day 1 on the calendar, & making the clock read 12:00 PM. *Notice the Sun (yellow arrows), the Earth, and the Moon. 3. Click the "Introduction" tab at the top of the screen and read this information. 4. Click on the "How To" tab and read this information. 5. Return to the "Interactive" tab and observe what happens when you resume the time. *Notice= Earth rotates on its axis, & the moon revolves around the Earth. 6. Follow the directions on your Answer Sheet and answer the Q. # 1-9 for Task One (A). (B) Moon Phase Video

1. Watch the " Moon Phases " video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCweccNOaqo 2. Use your Answer Sheet to answer Q. #10-11 for Task One part (B) by drawing and naming the eight important phases of the Moon.

Task Two: Vocabulary

Scientists use special vocabulary terms to describe our Moon. It is important that you understand what these terms mean.

1. Find the terms on your answer sheet at THIS WEBSITE. (http://www.moonconnection.com/moon-glossary.phtml) 2. Record the definitions for #12-14 on your Answer Sheet.

Task Three: Happy Birthday Moon

(A) 1. Check out what the Moon looked like on your birthday. See what phase was it on the day you were born? ** Find out by clicking HERE (http://stardate.org/nightsky/moon), then draw a picture for #15 on your Answer Sheet.

2. Use your new vocabulary terms from tasks one and two to describe in words what your birthday Moon looked like (phase) and record the term/name for #16 on your Answer Sheet.

(B) 1. Scroll down the page and read the section titled: Why Does The Moon Have Phases, under the illustrated calendar of the moon phases. [Stop reading when you get to the part about the Harvest Moon.]

2. Answer questions #17 & 18 on your Answer Sheet.

Task Four: The Moon in a Month

You are starting to see just how much our moon changes. What patterns of change can be seen throughout a whole month?

1. Return to THIS (http://stardate.org/nightsky/moon) site and select the current Month and year. Or, even better… http://www.calendar-12.com/moon_calendar/2015/april

2. Draw in all of the dates and Moon Phases for this month for Q. #19-28 on your Answer Sheet.

3. Answer questions #29-32 that follow on the Answer Sheet.

Task Five: Movement in our Sky

Throughout the evening (and even during the day), the Moon, Sun, and Stars all appear to move across the sky.

1. For this task, explain why this happens for Q. #33 on your Answer Sheet. Use the following websites to help you: DO STARS MOVE? MOTIONS IN THE SKY PATHS OF THE STARS (play with the animation on this webpage! add a few stars, click "animate" and observe the star paths. Record observations on your Question Sheet. )

Task Six: Lining it all up

As you have recently discovered, the Moon changes appearance throughout the month. This change occurs because of the changing positions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun.

1. Follow the directions for #34-40 on your Answer Sheet and complete the table.
