Job Purpose Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Students, and the Head of Trent University Durham, and working collaboratively with all Durham Campus personnel, the Manager, Student Affairs provides the primary administrative leadership for student services on the Durham Campus. The Manager will also provide direct support to students based on training and qualifications. This position provides vision for student life and student support, and delivers a range of frontline programming and training the enhance student capacity and retention.

Key Activities Supervision; 1. Hires and supervises student services staff to provide student support as appropriate in academic advising, academic skills, career services, on campus student employment, counselling, disability services, housing, Liaison, student government advising, programming, Indigenous student support, athletics/wellness, communications, accommodated examination, and orientation. 2. Hires, trains and supervises student staff as appropriate, including for positions of progressive responsibility in administrative support, communications, athletics, events, student transitions, and peer mentorship. 3. Ensures all staff has appropriate training to match responsibilities.

Liaison; 1. Responsible for establishing and maintaining strong working relationships with all service departments in Peterborough to ensure a strong support network that sustains service to students and provides back-up to all Durham service providers. 2. Works with Trent liaison staff to identify effective marketing and liaison strategies to recruit students to the Durham campus. 3. Ensures campus tours, open house events and orientation activities are coordinated for all incoming students. 4. Sits as a member of the Durham Town & Gown committee to facilitate relationships within the community.

Responsible for development and oversight of all external agreements for provision of service to students including, but not limited to agreements with Durham and GO Transit, UOIT for joint student services, and the city of Oshawa for student use of municipal services such as community centres.

Administration; 1. Responsible for developing and managing annual student services budgets for Durham. 2. Oversight of office operations and scheduling in the student services area. 3. Responsible for implementation of the Trent University Charter of Student Rights and Responsibilities. Includes receiving Security reports and student complaints, investigating complaints, and developing solutions to student conduct issues, as set out in the Student Charter of Rights and Responsibilities. 4. Responsible for development and maintenance of off-campus housing service and website in compliance with City of Oshawa by-laws. 5. Acts as Co-Chair of the joint student services/student association committee for implementation of all student fees. Consult with student leaders on the administration of the annual fee review protocol in compliance with Ministry requirements. 6. Participates in monthly Student Affairs Directors meetings. 7. Oversees risk assessment of all student and campus programs in consultation with Trent University Risk Management. 8. Provides liaison and oversight for on-site food services. 9. Participates in University committees as appropriate to the position.

Student Transitions and Support; 1. Provides direct student support based on training/qualifications (e.g. counselling, disability support and strategies, and/or academic support). 2. Oversees the design and implementation of the summer orientation program for students/family members coming to Trent University Durham the upcoming academic year. 3. Oversees the development and implementation of the fall new student orientation. 4. Responsible for the development and implementation of appropriate programming and support for student transitions of all stages, including from first to second year, academic motivation and success, career planning, and assists with alumni development. Provide transition and support programs for under-represented or marginalized students. 5. Responsible for the development and implementation of preventative programming designed to develop students’ academic and life skills; provide programming and individual support for faculty and staff in supporting students in difficulty. 6. Provides individual support and referrals to students in difficulty as required. 7. Provides support and liaison to student crisis management and response. 8. Administers the Student Charter of Rights and Responsibilities in addressing issues of student conduct or conflict. 9. Develops, co-ordinates and implements on-campus student employment, including training for supervisors of student staff, work-study program implementation, joint training for student employees, scaffolding student skills development, and building capacity among student staff to act as peer supporters and role models. 10. Develops and implements special projects designed to support and recognize high- performing students.

Responsible for initiating and where appropriate delivering supportive academic, life skills and social student programs in consultation with student leaders, and based on needs expressed through student consultation, specifically targeted to increasing student development, connection with the campus, and retention. 2. Acts as primary advisor and liaison to student government, and administers agreement between Trent University and the student government. 3. Provides leadership skills development training for Durham student leadership, including providing leadership training and support, supporting informed decision- making, and assisting with planning, program development, conflict resolution and other assistance as required. 4. Responsible for the development and implementation of retention programs specific to the Durham student needs, and in consultation with students, faculty and staff.

Education Required 1. Honours degree required. 2. Training/certification in one or more of these areas required: Counselling, coaching, disability support, academic advising, and academic skills instruction. 3. Training in some or all of equity/diversity, risk management/harm reduction, suicide prevention, and/or mediation and conflict resolution are preferred.

Experience Required 1. A minimum of five years of progressive full-time experience in student support in a post- secondary setting. 2. Demonstrated supervisory and managerial experience is required. 3. Demonstrated understanding of university administration, service and educational goals and relevant legislation. 4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in individual and group settings; excellent active listening; excellent teaching/presentation skills; strong writing skills are all required. 5. Demonstrated ability to support students in difficulty, with empathy and with understanding of community impacts. 6. Demonstrated commitment to delivering programming to enhance students’ capacity to develop personal strengths/strategies, peer support, conduct/conflict prevention, academic capabilities, and persistence. 7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse student body in a cross-cultural environment. 8. Demonstrated ability to exercise risk assessment skills and sound judgement and to use initiative for activity implementation and problem solving. 9. Demonstrated ability to work extremely independently in a multi-tasking environment that requires a high level of adaptability; combined with excellent teamwork. 10. Demonstrated willingness to undertake a wide range of tasks, from higher-level planning to on-the-ground program delivery. 11. Experience with budgeting and financial management. 12. Strong computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office suite, databases. 13. Willingness and ability to work flexible hours.
