The American Sleep Medicine Foundation (ASMF) invites physicians (MD or DO) with faculty appointments who have completed an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved sleep medicine fellowship to apply for the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM) Junior Faculty Research Award. The awards will include research expenses such as salary support, supplies and overhead for the awardee. Please review the eligibility criteria for further details.
Sleep medicine is a young field. There are a limited number of physician scientists in training. ACGME fellowship programs have been developed to increase the pool of well- trained clinicians but do not address the need for training physician scientists. Physician scientists are vital to the development of new tools, techniques and treatments in sleep medicine, as well as to serve as teachers and mentors to the next generation of sleep clinicians.
In 2006, the Institute of Medicine concluded that “compared to other fields the current number of clinicians and scientists in the (sleep medicine) field is not sufficient, given the public health burden of sleep loss and sleep disorders. Furthermore, NIH, academia, and private foundations have not sufficiently supported the development of an adequate workforce.”1 Recommendation 7.1 of the report states: “The National Institutes of Health and private foundations should increase investment in interdisciplinary somnology and sleep medicine research training and mentoring activities.”
With the development of the ABSM Junior Faculty Research Award program, the ASMF seeks to provide research training for young faculty members who wish to pursue careers as physician scientists in sleep medicine. This award program is funded primarily by the ABSM endowment. 2 2017 ABSM Junior Faculty Research Award Eligibility Physicians (MD or DO) who are certified in sleep medicine by a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties, are within 10 years post sleep medicine fellowship and hold a faculty appointment are eligible to apply. Successful applicants must be members of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine at the time of acceptance of the award, and membership must be maintained for the duration of the award. Individuals who have received an ASMF SRA I or II as PI are not eligible to apply for career development awards or junior faculty awards (except mid-career awards). Individuals may receive only one CDA/Junior Faculty award from the ASMF. Individuals may apply for multiple awards, but may accept only one. Note: Individuals who have received a CDA/Junior Faculty Award are encouraged to apply for ASMF strategic research awards; however, the investigator must demonstrate that there is no budgetary or scientific overlap between the CDA and SRA projects. Individuals who have received independent research funding of more than $150,000 are not eligible to apply. This does not apply to post-doctoral/fellowship level training grants primarily covering the applicant’s salary (e.g. NRSAs).
Requirements for Application Applications must include evidence of completion of a Sleep Medicine Fellowship, a commitment to the applicant by a University in the United States to provide a faculty position with a research component for at least 3 years, a research plan, description of institutional resources, the applicant’s involvement in an academic sleep program at his/her institution, and letters of support from the Department chair, research mentor and, if applicable, a letter from the Director of the applicant’s Sleep Medicine Fellowship. The applicant is responsible for securing these letters of support.
Structure of Award The ABSM Junior Faculty Research Award program will award $75,000 spread over two years to up to two applicants per year. The funding request for this award may not exceed $75,000 in total costs (including direct and indirect costs). There are no restrictions on the distribution of expenses; however, indirect costs are capped at 8%. This award will be a contract between the ASMF and the recipient institution. Salary support will be provided commensurate with the applicant’s current stipend or salary. The ASMF will not fund ongoing projects that are currently funded by another awarding body, and the investigator or organization will be required to make a statement to this effect prior to execution of the contract. These awards are also not intended to supplement ongoing work, for example, for enrolling additional subjects into an ongoing trial. If the proposed research becomes funded by another awarding body during the course of the award, the ASMF must be notified and reserves the right to terminate the award. In some circumstances, the ASMF will consider requests for matching funds for projects that require such funds by another awarding body if there is indication that the other award is to be given, pending matching funds.
3 2017 ABSM Junior Faculty Research Award Payment Structure: The payment structure for this award is outlined in the chart below:
Awards – Up to $75,000 Payment – At execution of Contract 90% Payment - Upon receipt and approval of Final Report 10% Reporting – Progress reports Every 6 months Reporting – Final report 90 days of completion
If unique circumstances are explained in the budget justification of the applicant’s proposal, the Board of Directors will consider requests for an alternate payment schedule, with a maximum variance of 10%.
Duration of Award The duration of the award is two years. The project plan and budget must clearly state the expected duration of the proposed project.
Award Review Criteria and Process An award review committee appointed by the ASMF Executive Committee will evaluate and score proposals. Final funding decisions will be made by the ASMF Board of Directors. Factors that will be taken into consideration include: 1. The applicant's experience and interest in sleep research, 2. Availability of resources necessary to complete the study (including the commitment and experience of any mentor that has been established to assist with career development), 3. Feasibility and scientific merit of the goals and activities planned, 4. The training plan/training environment, 5. Responsiveness to the current RFA and appropriateness of the proposed research/training activities to the ASMF mission, and 6. The anticipated relationship between the funds provided and expected outcomes, including potential contribution of this work to the development of the applicant's academic career in sleep medicine, and degree of institutional support evident in the application. Institutional support should include tangible evidence of direct support of the applicant's research career development, such as additional funded research time, access to existing research resources and programs, strong mentorship and sustained commitment over a period of time deemed adequate for development. 7. The ASMF wishes to emphasize its requirement that the applicant's department chair and mentor provide assurance of a strong level of commitment to truly support the applicant's career path, including honoring protected time for scholarly activity and investigation, consistent with the effort reflected in the proposed budget, during the period of this award. The department chair's and mentor’s letters of support should include specific details of how receipt of this award, and the associated protected time it entails, will create unique opportunities that facilitate the applicant's successful academic career in sleep medicine. The letters should also describe any committed additional or matching research funds from the applicant's department or mentor, and how these funds will be used to bolster the applicant's program of investigation.
4 2017 ABSM Junior Faculty Research Award Also, to increase geographical, institutional and individual diversity among awardees, the ASMF will take into consideration the applicant’s and the applicant institution’s history of prior ASMF awards.
Expected Outcomes The ASMF intends the ABSM Junior Faculty Research Award to aid new faculty in the development of a career in academic sleep medicine.
