1000 Lives Plus Summary of Communications Activity as at February 2011
1. Report on release of final Campaign figures (Nov 2010) Gained press coverage in the Western Mail, Daily Post and South Wales Argus along with significant online coverage, including a video interview with Dr Alan Willson on the ITV Wales website. An end of Campaign report was published - ‘Two Years to Make a Difference’ was distributed widely to key contacts and every organisation within NHS England. The report was downloaded over 1,500 PDF copies from our website. First Minister Carwyn Jones expressed “a thousand thank yous” to NHS Staff for their achievements during the Campaign.
2. Media coverage – highlights Full page interview with Rebecca O’Malley (keynote speaker at November’s National Learning Event) in the Western Mail. Local press coverage of visit to Transforming Care wards by representatives of the Danish Society for Patient Safety (Sikker Patient), as well as a visit of a journalist from the ‘Danish BBC’ to do a piece on the work at ABMU Health Board. Full page review of the Back to Bevan seminar in the Western Mail. Positive article about the Campaign/programme by Dr Jean White, Nurse Director of NHS Wales in Nursing Times. Citation in bibliography of article in Journal of the Royal College of Physicians. Combined total print media hits: 1 May 2010 – Jan 2011 = 66 Combined readership of press hits in the above period (where known) = 1,668,745 1000 Lives Campaign posters spotted in the background of an episode of ‘Pobol Y Cwm’, which follows a background appearance on ‘Hollyoaks’ last year!
3. Online activity The programme’s website has had its highest number of hits since the Campaign was launched. In December, we recorded over 50,000 page views across the English and Welsh language sites. However, this increased to 61,967 page views from both sites in January. (During the Campaign, the average number of page views was approx 40,000). A special edition of the e-newsletter was released to announce the Campaign’s final figures, which achieved over 4,800 recorded opens and a recorded ‘click through’ rate of almost 10%. The January e-newsletter had comparable first week open and click-through statistics to the November special edition. A student version of the e-Newsletter is now produced for members of the Wales Student Chapter. There are now over 4,000 recipients of the email newsletter.
4. Publications 21 Improvement Guides have now been published in total. The latest guides to be published include Enhances Recovery after Surgery, Measuring Mortality, Improving Dementia Care and Transforming Maternity Services. All are available online. 1000 Lives PB 02 09
A White Paper on systems thinking in the NHS is now available online and hard copies will be available shortly. A White Paper based on the Back to Bevan seminar will also be published shortly. ‘The Pocket Guide to Improvement for Wales’ is nearing completion, which will enable the transfer of the programme’s improvement methodology into other public services. The communications work of 1000 Lives Campaign has been used as a Case Study by the Welsh Assembly Government’s ‘Engage’ team. This is available on the Communications Resources page, alongside a guide to producing an email newsletter.
5. Raising the profile of the work The 1000 Lives Campaign has been shortlisted in the BMJ Awards for 2011 in the ‘Best Improvement in Quality and Safety Category’ and winners will be notified at the Awards Dinner on 18 May. The 1000 Lives Campaign has also been shortlisted for a ‘Safer Surgery’ Patient Safety Award. The programme will be exhibiting at the International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare in Amsterdam during 5-8 April. A number of posters on the work have been accepted and Jan Davies and Annette Bartley are presenting on the Transforming Care work that has been developed in Wales. The programme will also be exhibiting at The Patient Safety Congress in London on the 17 and 18 May.
