TOPIC: Adoption of New Textbooks for the Following High School Science Courses:  Biology  Anatomy  Ecology  Environmental Science  Chemistry  Earth Science  Physics  Astronomy  Oceanography  Science Research BACKGROUND:

Texts for middle school science courses were last adopted in 2003. In 2010, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) adopted revised Standards of Learning for Science. In 2012, the VDOE published a list of approved textbooks for Science. The list of texts is available at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/instruction/textbooks.

Committees of ACPS educators reviewed the state-approved texts, using the following criteria:  Consistent alignment with ACPS curriculum.  Support for inquiry and ACPS science measurement topics.  Accurate, significant, engaging, and well written content.  Promotion of progressive building of knowledge, skills, and understanding.  Inclusion of tasks that promote evidence based scientific investigation.  Support of instruction that actively engages the students to promote their understanding of the science.  Promotion of literacy through the use of science notebooks, scientific argumentation, and scientific text.  Support of balanced assessment with materials.  Support for differentiated instruction.  Inclusion of interactive digital content that is accessible to students and teachers. IMPACT:

The focus of this textbook adoption process is to provide students and teachers with outstanding resources that will support and enhance the understanding of science. Students will have access to an up-to-date, online textbook with many interactive features. Class sets of print materials will be purchased to supplement the online textbook.
