Movie Review: Megamind
The latest in Dreamworks Animation is a film called Megamind. It’s in 3D, and much of that particular aspect of the film looks good. This tale revolves around a super villain named Megamind (Will Ferrell) who really isn’t very good at what he does. The trouble is he just doesn’t seem to have it in him to be a good villain. His attempts to stop the self-centered superhero Metro Man (Brad Pitt) never end well. It has sort of a Wile E. Coyote vs. the Road Runner vibe to it. Yet somehow, by some strange miracle, Megamind finally destroys his enemy. After kidnapping local TV reporter Roxanne Ritchi (Tina Fey) he is able to stop the mighty hero with something he never planned on. But of course, another “hero” replaces Metro Man and it goes horribly wrong, forcing Roxanne and Megamind to work together. For the most part, this part of the storyline is entertaining.
The idea was clever and as mentioned, Ferrell and Cross are terrific. Tina Fey also added to the mix as Roxanne. The humor is there, and you can’t help but have a little enjoyment when it comes to Mega trying as hard as he does to finally do something right… or wrong, depending on the way you look at it. And of course, the animation itself is very good. Yet with all that works here, it was only mildly entertaining. The biggest disappointment was Brad Pitt. The man is a terrific actor, but his character was uninteresting, and lacked the color and energy that the rest of the cast offered.
As mentioned, the feeling of déjà vu is really heavy throughout Megamind. It feels a little bit like Monsters vs. Aliens, and it suffers from the same problem that particular film did. They both look good and the 3D works, yet the story feels weak and it drags on just a little too long. As great as the packaging is, it still feels slightly empty and hollow. This is not a bad thing if you are just looking for a way to kill time, but if you expect more from your animation, this may not be for you.
