COURSE DESCRIPTION

The focus of this class is to practice and refine job skills necessary to obtain and maintain paid/nonpaid employment in the community. Students will have the opportunity to have individual time to job search, create/update a resume, practice interviewing skills, research training or education requirements for different occupations and complete interest/ability inventories. Students will be involved in a variety of hands-on activities in the community such as, touring work sites, visiting the Workforce Center, job shadowing, etc.

COURSE OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES Students will  review job seeking skills  complete job application  develop and/or update resume and cover letter  demonstrate appropriate interviewing skills  describe benefits provided by employers  identify proper safety procedures  define OSHA standards  describe health and safety hazards on the job  know employee rights/accommodations on the job  state procedures to take if hurt on the job  understand job evaluation procedures and dealing with constructive criticism  understand raises, promotions, and dismissal  demonstrate how to ask for time off from work  demonstrate the appropriate ways to call in when going to be late or sick  demonstrate how to fill out a timecard and track work hours  identify information on a paystub  identify the importance of getting along with others  demonstrate appropriate ways to deal with customers  how non-verbal behavior communicates on the job  demonstrate the steps for solving problems on the job  identify rules of proper workplace conduct  differentiate between a job and a career  identify and set realistic career goals  explore career clusters and identify key clusters  complete self assessments (interest, aptitude, and ability inventories)  describe strengths and weaknesses Employment Development & Coordination Course Description/Course Section 2010-11 School Year  develop and update a resume  develop and update a cover letter  list three references to list on an application  complete the application for employment/college  describe how to apply for a replacement social security care and/or birth certificate

GRADING SYSTEM

North & Tartan High School Students will be graded based on participation in class and in the community, class assignments, quizzes/tests and a final exam. The majority of students will receive a letter grade, unless alternative grading is necessary.

The Next Step Transition Program/ALC Students will be graded based on participation in class and in the community, class assignments, and quizzes/tests. All students will be graded on a pass/fail grading scale.

Trimester 1

Job Seeking  How to search for a job  Complete a job application  Develop and/or update a resume and cover letter  Describe strengths and weaknesses  Demonstrate appropriate interview skills

Job Safety  Review safety procedures on the job  Review company safety policies  Demonstrate knowledge of employee rights/accommodations on the job  Identify knowledge of worker’s compensation law

Trimester 2

Employee Procedures  Review employer job evaluation procedures  Demonstrate appropriate ways to respond to constructive criticism  Understand requirements leading to a raise, promotion or job dismissal  Demonstrate ways to call in when sick or late  Demonstrate appropriate ways to ask supervisor for time off  Read and locate information on a paystub Employment Development & Coordination Course Description/Course Section 2010-11 School Year

Success on The Job  Demonstrate knowledge of the importance of getting along with others  Demonstrate appropriate ways to interact with diverse co-workers/customers/employers  Demonstrate appropriate non-verbal and verbal communication on the job  Identify the steps to solve problems on the job  List the rules of proper workplace conduct

Trimester 3

Job & Career Development  Demonstrate knowledge of the difference between a job and a career  Review and update realistic career goals  Identify career clusters of interest  Complete/update employment self-assessments

Develop a Career Portfolio  Learn the steps to obtain quality references  Describe what a good reference is  List three references to use on a job application  Complete an application for employment/college  Possess copies of a social security card and birth certificate  Learn the importance of a letter of recommendation
