Abstract

1 This internship report is to summarize my training period in General Contracting Company

(GCC). This period transferred me from theoretical stage to practical stage of engineering, and obtained me to apply what I learned at PMU on a real work.

The eight weeks that spent at the esteem company (GCC) from June 2012 to August 2012 , provided me with largest amount of knowledge and benefits throughout the huge numbers of engineers at the company as 80% of its employees are engineers , this gave me more confidence and trust about my future position, this was increased during their cooperative and true helping of them to provide me with the basics of our field and our study.

Data in this report was collected from the, handbooks, brochures that provided to me, and from divisions and departments that I worked in , also the verbal directs of the supervisors in these divisions.

5 Main Text

Introduction

Starting from 16th June 2012, I worked at General Contracting Company (GCC) as an engineer trainee, this company was founded in 1947 and started with a personal loan secured on Suliman Olayan home. GCC was reached a high level of quality and professionalism throughout hard work in serving Saudi business .

The internship is an important part of Mechanical Engineering methodology in Prince

Mohammad Bin Fahd University (PMU). The internship course objective is to learn students

6 about the work life, and the operations in the work market, as it consider the first opportunity for the students to learn and take view about the nature of engineering field.

I took my chance at GCC in both : service and sales departments . GCC main business is in providing huge kinds of engines , trucks, concrete machines, asphalt machines, cranes, buses, construction machines , while the minor business is in fixing machines and engines.

This report will include my training period and experience in GCC at service department represented in the company workshop in one hand , and on the sales department on the other hand.

The Company Overview:

General Contracting Company was founded in the summer of 1947, the first customer was

Bechtel company which established the Trans-Arabian Pipe Line (Tapline) which link the oil wells in Saudi with Mediterranean sea. This first success of GCC enabled the company to play a key role in developing Saudi electrical and mechanical companies.

7 The largest contracts that the company implemented with Saudi Aramco company gave the company more trust in the market as the quality and profession are the first affiliate for this company which push the company to lead the market in providing the best quality machines to build the country .

The company now having more than 12 globally partners and it has the products franchise of these partners such as Terex, Scania, and Cummins.

Business Activities :

Below are the activities that GCC engaged in as follows :

GCC through its network of branches in Saudi Arabia deals , services, and sells everything from electrical power generating equipments to tractors, combines, trucks, loader attachments, buses, and fire trucks.

Sectors Serving

GCC serves a variety of sectors include : transportation, agriculture, construction, civil and many other sectors.

GCC Brands

GCC had a partnership in brands with the most famous world leaders such as :

Amco Veba : which provide Truck Cranes.

CNH Case : provide Construction & agriculture equipment.

Cummins : provide Engines & Power generation systems.

Fleetquard : Diesel engine filters.

Irizar : manufacturing inter-city & long distance buses.

Terex : Earth- Moving equipment.

Scania : Medium & heavy trucks.

GCC divisions

Sales and services are provided through GCCs seven divisions as follows :

1. Agriculture division : which provide and serve the agriculture equipment and sale of

new achiness to the sector.

2. Construction division : sales and serves the construction machines and equipment,

fixing the damage machines and provide advices to customers.

3. Energy Business Solutions(EBS) & Rental : provides solutions for energy problems ,

planning for capacity of energy and renting machines and equipments.

4. Industrial and Marine : implementing the industrial projects and provide marine

sector with equipments and tools that required at the ports or for transport material .

5. Power : provides solutions for engines and sales of new engines .

6. Specialized Services ( custom trucks and attachments) .

7. Transportation : find solutions for transportation systems and sales of buses and other

transportation means.

Activities and Responsibilities

During the eight weeks or two months that I spent at GCC, I learned a lot of information and practical data about mechanical engineering, my period was divided into two divisions based on my supervisor Mr. Adnan advice : service department which mainly work in fixing machines and power generated, and sales division which concern for sales of machines, cranes, and other engine tools.

Day-to-Day activities

9 In the First Week , my supervisor gave me an information about the company and the nature of our work as follows :

In Day1: I took a general information about the company and what is the training schedule that we will follow during our training.

In Day2: We had a meeting with Mr. Andrew the general manager of both the sales and services departments. He provided us with some information about the company and the rules that we have to follow. He gave us a general information about the power generating devices.

In the Days : 3, 4, 5: They gave me a handbook that has an overview of the general power devices that are provided by the company. Then we had a meeting with our co-workers and discussed the ways to operate the devices and the simple procedures that we had to follow for our safety.

In the Second Week the scenario was as the following details:

Day1,2: They provided us with a broken device that needed to be fixed in order to continue our work. They showed us how to work on particular damages and what is the best way to fix them.

Day3,4,5: In these days they showed us how to clean certain parts on certain devices in order to avoid any future mishaps and to make our work complete and efficient.

While in the Third Week the training take a new direction as follows :

Day1: In this day we received the power generated from the customers.

Day2: In this day we complete what we did in yesterday it takes a lot of time to received the machines.

10 Day3, 4, 5: In these days we work in power generation we need to emery the machine some of them and anther machine only fix the problem, so one machine it well take with us maybe one week to open it only, so in 3 days we just try to open the machine and learn how to open and there are some principles to open.

In the Fourth Week the training was mainly as follows :

Day1: We had a fix the another machine with another group.

Day2: We had a meeting with Mr. Adnan Alobaid

Day3,4,5: In these days they showed me how to clean the pipe and the some of the parts in machine, and when we finish clean, we go back to emery machine until now we not finish for these generation.

In the Fifth Week , I transferred to the sales division as this is the second part of my training , this division need more qualifications from engineers as it deal with customers from different classes and levels , so this job need more knowledge as to explain the features of each product at the show room of the company.

Day 1 : In the first day I stand with the show room supervisor who explained to me the nature of each products which the company deals with.

Day 2 : In this day I stay with sales representatives who are engineers knows everything about the sales ways and details , I know the different methods of sales through direct , telephone, e- mail and web site sales.

Day 3 &4 : I went to the company store which is near the company building , it is a wide land that includes the huge cranes, buses , loaders, and other machines that the company sale , we learn here the features and nature of each of these products.

11 Day 5 : I return to the sales show room and learned more about the engines , tools, and machines that the company deals with .

In the Six Week I continue my training in the sales department :

In Day 1: In this day I review a previous sales contracts that made by the department , I see the conditions , the nature of products, the company responsibility.

Day 2 & 3 & 4 : I sit beside the sales representative during doing sales contracts with the company customers , the contracts are already prepared but it need to fill the technical points.

Day 5 : I worked with sales engineer during the display of the company different products, showing the brochures, and I watched the explaining of the different usage of the machines.

In the Seventh Week I still at sales department:

In Day 1 & 2 : I spent most of this day to review the different products that the company imported from its outside partners such as cranes, asphalt machines, construction vehicles and machines , and trucks .

Day 3: I went with the sales representative in visit a contracting company who need to purchase our products , we show to them the machines that available and explaining each product feature and usage.

Day 4&5 : In these two days I learned how to fill the sales request , the sales order , and what to do when a purchase order coming from one customer, and the ways to fill the sales contract with the purchaser.

In the Eight Week I entered a new stage at sales department as follows :

Day 1 : From the morning , the supervisor ask me to apply a complete sale contract if one of our customer comes to purchase our products, so I prepare all documents that required to

12 finish this task. We receive some orders in this day , while the sale contract will finish in the coming days.

Day 2 : One customer comes to purchase an power engine , I welcome him and explained the features of this engine , the way of work, the hours that work, the capacity , and the maintenance rules. Then I follow my job to sell the engine.

Day 3&4 & 5 : I continue my job in display the mechanical products to customers and finishing the sales process.

At end , I finished my internship, and at this moment , I believed that I can consider myself as a mechanical engineer who fill his theoretical knowledge at PMU with practical knowledge at GCC which increase my proud about my major in engineering.

Major Tasks or Projects

As the objective of my internship is to learn the work on the nature , and to apply the theoretical study in the practical life , my internship tasks are divided into two parts : one I learned fixing and building machines on the workshops or the plants , the other part was the sales and deals with different kinds of machines and engines.

I learned and worked in fixing machines using its handbook and catalogs , also in this side I used a soft ware program in fixing machines , also through search on the internet I follow the nature of manufacturing the damage machines.

On the other part, this internship give me the chance to know the new technology in mechanical engineering science which give me with perception about the importance of future following of the ne innovations and creativeness from all the world , and I believed that every day , there is a new innovation on my field of study in mechanical engineering , and I should be on near with these innovations every day.

13 Also I learned the importance of the new tools of manufacturing and fixing machines , this will not be able without following the new technology that help us in making our jobs and our life more simple and comfortable , saving our time and provide us with more benefits.

Conclusion

The period that spent on GCC was helped me in understanding mechanical engineering better and to know the basics in my field and its applications.

Internship period put me on the first step of my future work in engineering which I will continue on it , it give me the power to forget fear from doing my job and tasks in my work life. It learned me many new principles that any one should apply , one of these is the importance of work in a team and participation with them , it give more worthy ideas and self confidence to all the team , also it learned me the importance of working hard to achieve the objectives and perform better.

At end , from the most important things that I learned in my internship was the importance of my major mechanical engineering to the life , countries, companies, and individuals , mechanical engineering is on the core of the life , it is the source of progress and development especially for our countries in the third world, without the innovations of

14 mechanicals , nothing will developed , the machines, tools, vehicles, transport means , and everything surrounding us need for mechanical engineers , this ideas give more confidence regarding my correct choose in my studying and my future work life.

19 My internship period was full of new knowledge and technologies that I benefited from work at GCC , in mechanical engineering division. Firstly , I took data, information , and techniques at the company , my supervisor assign to me two divisions to work on : service division and sales division. At these two divisions I learned a lot of knowledge and information about the real work on mechanical engineering which give me more support to my theoretical knowledge at PMU . After finish my internship period , I have a practical experience on the components of mechanical methods, tools and techniques. I can fix different types of equipments and I can lead technicians to the best way to do their works. On the side of sales , I was learned the best ways to display different equipment with knowledge of their specific features and the safety ways for using of it.

What new knowledge or skill have you acquired as a result of this internship? My internship was full of new knowledge and many skills that I have acquired :

The knowledge : mainly was to know different types of machines , and the new style of designing its technology, adding to that the practical know of fixing machines on a real work to serve customers needs.

The skills : was to be quick, accurate, professional and provide quality deal with power equipments and generators, add to this the skills of sales machines which I learned at GCC , the way to display features of machines and convincing customers to purchase. Which courses, if any, have helped you in learning the new knowledge, skills and technologies needed to do your work?

20 At PMU the courses of mechanical engineers was full of new knowledge about designing machines , these courses was the base on my work as I benefited when I do the work on nature. Courses about power and energy generating was helped me in power planning and doing some services on fixing machines.

What would have better prepared you forth is semester's work?

After the internship experience , I believed that we need more practical works at the semesters as this is the way to understand mechanical engineering , and this will be the life work in all my life , so practical knowledge is essential in our case.

Suggest ways in which you think the Internship Program, as a whole can be improved: I suggest many ways to improve internship program as follows : 1- Increase the time of internship to be around four months , as many jobs cannot finish and cannot learn Everything in the available period of two months. 2- Provide our supervisors at the internship institution the level of students and the knowledge that they Learned at PMU as to be consistent with our knowledge. 3- Provide us with practical work at companies and factories during the years of study, as this will increase Our perception of real work. 4- Evaluate our work directly on the land of internship institutions each period, and direct us with the best Advices and best ways to get internship quality.

Summary:

GCC management assigned to me to work under services department in this period , at the beginning they gave me an view about the company and the nature of business , then they told me about nature of services department. Also a lot of handbooks and brochures were provided to me to understand more about work on both services and sales departments.

My supervisor explain to me the internship plan that I will work on service department and sales department to take every concerns of my major in mechanical engineering.

GCC is one of the best mechanical and electrical companies in the kingdom, it doing

work in high level of quality and profession , it include about 80% of its employees from

engineers

In this report I will talk about the progress during the internship period in GCC

including the departments that I worked in , and tasks that I learned , also will show the

benefits from each period.

Following the company schedule I will explain the training that I acquired in the first

two weeks which will be the details under progress title.

Progress

1) Planed Work:

24 The manager divided my training program into 2 divisions. Each month we are

moved to a new division so we can benefit from each division we work in. in the first

two weeks he gave me during the work an view about the nature of mechanical

engineering in practice as view about the company businesses.

2) Work Done :

Starting from 16th June, the first day of the internship, my supervisor show

me the services department which mainly includes the workshop for fixing ,

repairing and maintenance machines which is the core of mechanical engineering.

He also learned me the rules, the procedures and the team of this department.

The First week :

On next day 17th of June which is the Day2: We had a meeting with Mr. Andrew the

general manager of both the sales and services departments. They provided us with

some information about the company and the rules that we have to follow. He gave us

a general information about the power generating devices.

In the Days : 3, 4, 5: they gave me a handbook that has an overview of the general

There are two problems mainly :

* The air condition device was damaged and we faced many problems

because of that excessive heat.

* There were not enough tools to clean the parts that were damaged in the

devices.

The other problems was in knowing details of machines component and each

usage , and this was solved directly by the supervisor.

Summary:

Third and fourth week which is the second period in my progress report was followed as my schedule to repairing machines and fixing equipments directly from customers who owns these machines. This was done during two weeks at services department.

of this kind of jobs.

Summary:

Third period which is the fifth and sixth week was planned to be at sales department which will include work at the show room , the company land stores , and to be near the sales representative to learn everything about different types of machines and equipment , and new trend in designing and manufacturing machines.

Background:

Following the previous four weeks, my internship will be in the field of mechanical engineering as to learn more about equipments, its usage , its features and different types of sectors that can utilizes these machines.

32 Progress

1) Planed Work:

In this period I planned to learn everything about sales of huge

machines , engines , and equipments to different customers , so this need from

me to be more aware and read the catalogs in focus at parallel with sales

representative advices and rules.

2) Work Done :

In this period the problems coming from the need more knowledge about

different usage of machines as to present in a good way to customers , it need

from me to search for types of equipments , its usage and features, its capacity and

benefits for customers.

4) Schedule :

This period will be on the dales department as no changeon the

schedule , job now is more clear for me , it need more efforts to understand

and increase my data on this subject.

5) Plans

My plan for the coming period which is the last period is continue

learn about sales mechanism and the ways to accept customer mind and

convincing him to purchase my product, at the same time , I should learn

different types of sales contracts and the ways to finish deals and search for

international new products and tools.

Summary:

This is the last period or the fourth period which represent the seventh and eighth week. I will continue my internship and training at sales department in GCC company, in this period , a lot of principles and information I gained in the previous periods , so I will try to fill the remaining points in sales field and know more about the new technology in manufacturing different equipments and machines.

Background:

My plan during the work at GCC is set in this period which represent the last period and it will appear as follows :

36 At End Report Submission

The report is about training and internship both departments : services and sales at GCC company which is a good application of mechanical engineering field.

Progress

1) Planed Work:

In this week , I try to know the features of each machine as to tell

customers with all usage of it to get the best utilization of it, so this required

from me to ask supervisors, search on the handbooks, search through the

manufacturing companies to learn everything.

2) Work Done :

In the Seventh Week I still at sales department:

In the first and second Days: I spent most of this day to review the different products

that the company imported from its outside partners such as cranes, asphalt machines,

construction vehicles and machines , and trucks. In Day 3: I went with the sales

representative in visit a contracting company who need to purchase our products , we

show to them the machines that available and explaining each product feature and

usage. In Day 4&5 : in these two days I learned how to fill the sales request , the sales

order , and what to do when a purchase order coming from one customer, and the

ways to fill the sales contract with the purchaser.

In the Eight Week I entered a new stage at sales department as follows:

37 In the first Day: from the morning , the supervisor ask me to apply a complete sale

contract if one of our customer comes to purchase our products, so I prepare all

documents that required to finish this task. We receive some orders in this day , while

the sale contract will finish in the coming days. In Day 2 : one customer comes to

purchase an power engine , I welcome him and explained the features of this engine ,

the way of work, the hours that work, the capacity , and the maintenance rules. Then I

follow my job to sell the engine. In Day 3&4 & 5: I continue my job in display the

mechanical products to customers and finishing the sales process.

At end of my internship, I worked with support of my supervisor in learn the

ways to work as one of a team , to contribute and participate with others which will

guarantee the success and progress of the team which will lead to the success of the

organization.

Cooperative with other employees and engineers was basically relay on the

consistence that should be managed between the participants as to give the work more

strength and productivity , this will not be done without cooperative with all members

of the team.

At end , I finished my internship, and at this moment , I believed that I can consider myself as a mechanical engineer who fill his theoretical knowledge at PMU with practical knowledge at GCC which increase my proud about my major in engineering.

3) Problems:

In fact, there s no problems in this part of internship.

4) Schedule :

38 No changes on the schedule in this period, more every than had been cleared

and walk with consistency.

5) Plans

At this period, as finished the internship training, I plan to write my report to

evaluate my internship.
