Early Childhood Educator 2 October 2014 Position Summary Under the supervision of the Child Care Program Manager, the Early Childhood Educator 2 will lead a team of Child Care Assistants and provide quality child care for newcomer children whose parents are participating in settlement and social programs. The ideal candidate is experienced, thrives in a multicultural environment and is committed to IRCOM’s core values of integration, inclusion, social justice and empowerment. The ideal candidate works in a way that is people- centered, holistic and partnership based. Background The Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba Inc. (IRCOM) is a non-profit organization that operates a transitional housing complex in downtown Winnipeg. Newcomer families living at IRCOM House as well as others living in the surrounding community can access a range of services including English as an Additional Language classes, After School Programs for children and youth, financial literacy and matched savings programs and core settlement services to help with everything from winter survival to how to get a job in Canada. Currently, IRCOM House is home to families from 14 countries, who speak over 30 different languages.
Duties and Responsibilities
The ECE 2 is required to:
Lead a team of Child Care Assistants in providing quality child care Plan and deliver relevant emergent and child-centered curricula for children aged 6 months to 6 years Implement Care for Newcomer Children (CNC) Guidelines, developed and monitored by CMAS, to provide safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate care for newcomer children Adhere to IRCOM’s policies and procedures Discuss children’s progress or concerns with Child Care Program Manager, parents and other staff as needed Set up and take down equipment and other items used in the program as needed Work with team members to create a positive environment Regular lifting and participating in physical activities Attend regular Child Care Program meetings as well as IRCOM staff meetings Have effective and positive communication skills Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Early Childhood Education Level II Diploma Valid Criminal Record Check, and clear Child Abuse Registry Check, First Aid and CPR Certificate Ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds effectively Independent, with ability to provide leadership and direction to other child care staff Strong communication skills in English (written and oral) Sensitivity to the needs and concerns of newcomer families Must be open-minded, resourceful, highly motivated, creative and independent Positive attitude and friendly manner Strength, stamina and ability to work with active, young children Knowledge of a language other than English is an asset Newcomer experience is an asset International education/experience is valued Hours of Work
This is a full-time position to a maximum of 37.5 hours per week with an annual shut down (July and August). The ECE2’s hours will take place predominantly during IRCOM business hours between 9am and 5pm, however, staff may be asked to work some evenings and weekends as required by the program.

Other
The starting salary for this position is $17.50/hr. Selected candidate must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
