Course Syllabus

Course Description: Child Development 3 examines basic principles in the planning, development, and implementation of early childhood curriculum. The student develops teaching skills in dramatic play, music, art, moldable materials, blocks, and carpentry.

Course Objectives: 1. Prepare and demonstrate age-appropriate curriculum. 2. Compare/contrast curriculum that supports learning through play. 3. Design and describe activities that support creative learning. 4. Evaluate appropriate activities that support growth and development. 5. Demonstrate competency in planning/presenting process-driven curriculum. 6. Design/demonstrate activities using found and recycled materials.

Student Learning Outcomes: 1.) Design and develop age-appropriate curriculum for preschool-age children. 2.) Develop a lesson play that focuses on play and creativity.

Textbook: Creative Activities for Young Children, 11th Edition by Mary Mayesky. Delmar Cengage Learning: Clifton Park, NY, 2015.

Supplies: Students will be required to supply their own materials and needed items for assigned class projects. All assigned projects will be returned to the students.

Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on the following items: 1. Timely completion of assignments 6. Verbal and written skills 2. Quality of work 7. Punctuality 3. Neatness and attention to detail 8. Participation in class (clean-up, too!) 4. Organization and preparedness 9. Group, individual, and class projects 5. Spelling, punctuation, and grammar 10. Sectional exams

Standards of Student and Disciplinary Action: LAVC is dedicated to maintaining an optimal learning environment for students as outlined in LACCD Board Rule 9803.

Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD): Accommodations and services are determined by the nature and extent of the disability and disability-related educational limitations of the student and provided based on recommendations of SSD.

* Assignments are due as specified on syllabus or by instructor. Late work and make-ups can only be accepted if arrangements are made in advance and will receive a reduction in points. Please refer to Make-Up Policy. -2- ASSIGNMENTS

1. Individual Project I – “Art Experiences with Young Children” (100 points) Each student will plan and demonstrate one art activity from the following three choices: 2-D art, 3-D art, or moldable materials. Students will bring/demo materials, type a lesson plan and summary report, and attach resource materials related to his/her project. Materials and/or activities/games will be displayed for small group sharing on various due dates. The lesson plan & report packet with a coversheet will be turned in. Further instructions and rubric will be provided.

2. Individual Project II - “Language, Role Play, and Music Experiences with Young Children” (100 points) Each student will plan and demonstrate one activity from the following three choices: dramatic play, music & movement, or puppetry. Students will bring/demo materials, type a lesson plan and summary report, and attach resource materials. Materials and/or activities/games will be displayed for small group sharing on various due dates. The lesson plan & report packet with a coversheet will be turned in. Further instructions and rubric will be provided.

3. Class Participation and Homework (75 points ) Class participation is expected and very important. Students will participate in discussions, demonstrations, projects, and set-up/clean-up tasks. Students will be asked to bring in materials to share and to do occasional writing assignments . Class participation will be recorded, and students will receive points for these homework and in-class projects.

4. Exams Covering Course Material (3 x 75 = 225 points total) There will be three sectional exams covering the chapters and other material will cover in class – such as handouts, articles, film/DVDs, etc. Quiz #1 = chapters 1,2,3, and 5. Quiz #2 = chapters 6,7,9,12, and 13. Quiz #3 = chapters 14,15, block play, and 17.

GRADING: Class Participation: 75 pts. Grading Scale: Individual Projects: 200 pts. 475-500 pts. = A – 95%

(2 x 100 pts.) 425-474 pts. = B – 85% Sectional Exams: 225 pts. 375-424 pts. = C – 75% (3 x 75 pts.) 325-374 pts. = D – 65% Below 325 pts.= F ______Total: 500 points

Extra Credit: Students may have the opportunity to complete extra credit assignments throughout the session. The instructor will announce the assignments and discuss them during class sessions throughout the semester. A maximum of 20 points is allowed.

Attendance Policy: Students are expected to attend every meeting of all classes for which they are registered. Whenever absences “in hours” exceed the number of hours the class meets per week, the instructor may exclude the student from class. If the student stops attending the class, it is the student’s responsibility to officially drop the class -- Failure to do so may result in a failing grade. It is the student’s responsibility to consult with the instructor regarding any absences that would alter his or her status in the class. Tardies: Three (3) tardies will be considered the equivalent of one hour of absence.

*Under no circumstances will children be allowed in class. * Cell phones/electronics cannot be used during class or exams.

Cheating Policy: Cheating constitutes academic dishonesty and, in general will be handled as part of the course grading process. Penalty may range from no credit for the assignment up to and including exclusion and/or an “F” grade for the course.
