1. Draw a picture of the part of the story you like or remember most.

2. Make a list of the things that can be found in a vet’s office.

3. Pretend that you are Henry and that Mudge can read. Write him a letter explaining to him why you are taking him to the vet’s office.

4. Write about what makes you feel better when you are sick.

Introductions

1. Let the children examine the front book cover and predict what the story is going to be about. Say, “Let’s read and find out that you are correct.”

2. Have a discussion about the role of veterinarians. Say, “Today, we are going read about a sick dog who is afraid to go to the veterinarian. Let’s see if he finds some courage.”

3. Bring in the following items: comic book, popsicle box, crackers, toy stethoscope or picture of one . Without showing the children the book, ask if they can guess what they are going to be reading about. Say, “Today we are going to read about a boy and a dog who find comfort when they are sick. Let’s see how these items will appear in the book.”
