Appendix C - Rodent Breeding Colony Creation and Maintenance
This appendix must be filled out for all proposed rodent breeding colonies to be maintained at Tulane University. Please indicate if the animals are going to be generated by the Tulane Transgenic Mouse Facility, obtained from a commercial vendor, derived off site or obtained from another institution.
1. Describe the reason(s) for developing a rodent breeding colony. If this colony is for transgenic/knockout animals include a brief description of the transgene or knockout gene of interest. Also include any information on expected adverse effects anticipated with the transgene and if special care is required.
2. List the species and stock or strain used for each breeding colony.
3. Describe the genetic monitoring and animal identification program. Indicate how samples are collected for genotype determination. Acceptable methods of permanent identification include ear tags, ear notches, tattoos, or microchips. NOTE: Toe clipping is NOT an acceptable method and must be justified in you animal use protocol. Refer to http://tulane.edu/asvpr/iacuc/hsc/sops.cfm for policies on rodent identification and transgene identification.
4. Breeding Scheme: Please provide the following for each transgenic/knockout or other species being bred (answer for each transgenic line). These numbers should reflect the numbers required to produce the necessary experimental animals and to maintain colonies and should be consistent with the number of animals requested in the protocol or amendment. Transgenic # of Males # of Females Duration of Average # Anticipated Genotype # Used for # Used as Inappropriate or Knockout Needed and Needed and use as pups per #s of with experiments replacement genotype or Cross Genotype Genotype breeders litter litters/breedi anticipated breeders excess ng female proportions
5. Breeding colony oversight: Indicate who will be responsible for breeding, monitoring, weaning, and records. Personnel must be listed in Section IX of the protocol form or a Personnel Addition Form (PAF) must be on file. If responsible personnel are not assigned to your protocol please submit a PAF, available at http://tulane.edu/asvpr/iacuc/hsc/deadlines.cfm
6. Disposition: Please indicate the final disposition of all animals listed below. Method of euthanasia must be included in Section VII. H. or specified in an amendment.
