Name: ______

Level: I

What you should know about my level:  The texts are mostly shorter (8-16 pages), but there are also some early chapter books (40-60 pages) that require children to sustain attention and memory over time.  Children must keep track of longer sequences of events in stories.  Texts have longer sentences with more than ten words – children need to pay attention to parts of sentences (compound sentences, phrases, clauses)  Children will need to use a variety of strategies to read longer words, as well as to use context clues to help determine the meaning of new vocabulary words  Children will need to do more visualizing, to make up for a bit less picture support.  Children are beginning to meet more characters in series books, which will expand interest in reading, increasing the amount of time reading, and allowing children to notice character traits across multiple books  Texts have one main plot with multiple episodes over a period of time – chapter books may only cover a period of one day  Texts are beginning to require some interpretation on the part of the reader  Texts require quick solving of new words, including multisyllable words, as well as ed/ing endings, plurals, contractions and possessives.

All-Star Examples: Fly Guy (series), Dragon (series), The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear (Audrey Wood)
