Student Essay Applicants must prepare a three-paragraph essay (introduction, body, conclusion - typed or legibly written using black ink) addressing the following:  Reasons for wanting to participate in a Portsmouth Public School Center of Excellence Program.  Talents, hobbies, honors, and extracurricular activities.  Education and career interest/aspirations.

Teacher Recommendations Applicants must request recommendations from two teachers familiar with their abilities in the area of interest:

 International Studies – English and Social Studies  Mathematics, Science, and Technology – Science and Mathematics  Arts and Humanities – A core content teacher and a teacher familiar with your artistic talent (recommendations may be requested from private instructors in instrumental or vocal music)

Recommendations should be presented in a sealed envelope along with the completed application. Teachers should speak to the applicant’s grasp of fundamental ideas, work habits, potential for advanced study, use of critical thinking skills, positive sense of self, discipline, and attitude.

School Counselor/Administrator Recommendation & Transcript Applicants must request copies of the official transcript and attendance record from a guidance counselor or school administrator. Transcripts must be presented in a sealed envelope along with the completed application. Please request that your counselor or administrator signify (by signature on the transcript) that you have a demonstrated respect for authority and potential for advanced study.

Directions for Submittal: Submit your completed application, zone waiver, recommendations, and signed transcript to your Center of choice or a current counselor.
