King Saud University College of Applied Medical Sciences Rehabilitation Sciences Department Course Syllabus 1st Semestre 1430-1431 H 2009-2010 G Course Number: RHS 327 Course Title: Hydrotherapy Credit Hours: (2+2) Course Instructor: Dr. Afaf Ahmed Shaheen Course Description: This course provides the student with information related to superficial heating modalities (hydro-collator packs and paraffin wax) as well as cold therapy. This course also provides the student with basic information on properties of water and hydrodynamic principles that are essential to the techniques of hydrotherapy. In addition, students learn about equipment for hydrotherapy, therapeutic pool hygiene and management. The techniques of application, the physiological effects, the therapeutic uses, the indications and contraindications, the hazards and safety measures for each hydrotherapy, heat and cold modality shall be taught. There will be practical demonstration and application of each modality. The practicum will include a visit to a hospital therapeutic pool, during which each student will be mandated to enter and carry out exercises in the pool.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course students will be able to: 1. demonstrate the basics of skin physiology and sensation 2. Demonstrate basic principles of hydrotherapy and thermal agents. 3. Identify equipments used for hydrotherapy, superficial heating, and cold therapy. 4. Identify therapeutic uses of these techniques, their indications, contraindications, and management. 5. select the appropriate method of treatment for each pathological case 6. Apply the basic therapeutic techniques in hydrotherapy, thermotherapy and cryotherapy.
