1. PD Event: The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Process.

Glenda Hunter gave an energetic talk/demonstrations on the methodology developed by the Carnegie Foundation for Advancement of Teaching. She discussed work done by Jerome Bruner on inquiry based learning. Students increase learning if they are allowed to discover facts, and relationships. The discovery method puts information into long term memory. Glenda went through an example of chemistry students trying to learn stoichiometry. How can a teacher increase students' conceptual learning? One thing an instructor can do is use a student centered approach, which lends itself to the discovery method.

2. Steering Committee Update

Ted Hougham distributed the Ministry of Advanced Education Update. The handout covered the new provincial exams students must complete so that they can graduate from the Public system. There is an Online Transfer Guide for high school and post secondary student/parents/ and Instructors or Counselors to assist students moving between institutions in the province.

Ted encouraged the committees to keep the Articulation process active and upgraded on the BCCAT.ca website.

There is a concern about any institutes that are not sending instructors due to lack of funds. BCCAT would like to hear about any institutes that are using this excuse. The Colleges of BC do receive extra funding, from the government, for the articulation meetings.

"Online program Development Fund" is a new agency that funds articulation development. At the present time a study on Public and Private Institutes is being conducted. This study is addressing the increased demand from profit programs to be articulated.

Ted is stepping down as the ABE representative. He no longer works in this area of education.

3. Round Table Discussion:

Demand for General Science courses. Most colleges do not offer General Science courses. Students go directly into Advanced level Sciences. Exceptions to this are:

1. College of New Caledonia; Their program requires the students to have completed a grade 10 or Intermediate Level Science course in the last five years. If this requirement has not been met then the students are enrolled in a General Science course or take a Placement exam.

2. Okanagan University College (Kelowna Campus): Their program has designed the General Science to meet the basic requirements for entry into the Advanced level Science courses. They encourage the student to take the course if the student has never taken Sciences before. The program tends to target students coming out of the Literacy program.

Textbooks Articulation funded the development of a new series of textbooks for the General Science courses. They have not received very many requests for them. It seems that the most Colleges do not have General Science courses any longer and do not require the texts. If an institute does require sets of the text they can contact BCCAT or Queen’s Printer.

Karen Burns suggested that we get hold of and peruse a book called Hardwired for Hope. The book takes a revealing look into effective teaching in Adult Basic Education/Literacy.

4. PD Event: Canopy crawl at the Suspension Bridge Park and a tour of a Brewery.

The group packed themselves into cars and made it to the Park where a botany tour was conducted from bridges suspended through the trees. Then they packed themselves back into the cars and headed for a tour of the Brewery. A very knowledgeable guide took them through the brewing process.

Minutes of the Physics Sub-Committee Meeting

Attending: Sandra Friesen Peter Hopkinson Helena Higgs Jeanette Landry Lee Emery Lyle Olsen Kevin Barrie Steven Cheung Glenda Hunter John Pacheco Tom McBee Richard Farley Derek Knox Rick Brand

Two courses were presented for Articulation.

1. Nicola Valley Institute of Technology submitted Physics 050 as an Advanced level course. The course was accepted as an advanced level Physics course with two recommendations a. Should consider using a High School level textbook. Example: 2004 3rd Edition Conceptual Physics High School. Arthur: Addision/Weston b. Increase contact hours from 82 to 96 per section.

2. Selkirk College submitted Physics 080 as an Advanced level course. The course was turned down due to the lack of detail showing depth of coverage for each concept and lab. If Selkirk resubmits a more detailed course outline before April 7, 2005 the sub-committee will reevaluate their course.

Science Demonstrations.

Peter Hopkinson presented several demonstrations that could be used in class to show wave effects, light frequency, the force of Hydrogen bonds and projectile motion. ______

Report from Biology Subcommittee – March 11th 2005 Science Articulation Meeting at Capilano College

Present: Allison Alder (Chair, Selkirk), Jim Funk (VCC), Ken Shaw (Northwest), Gary Lawrence (VCC), Gordon McIntyre (VCC), Peter Robbins (Kwantlen), Shiona Northway (Malaspina), Liz Ritch (CNC), Dan Chetner (Okanagan), John Field (Capilano) , Phillida Drummond (North Island), Dave Owens (Northern Lights), Jane Horton (Cariboo), Skye Richards (VCC). Regrets: Rob Dramer (Douglas)

A round table discussion was held to exchange information regarding course offerings, texts, and the mode of delivery at each College. In summary, the greatest demand at most Colleges is for the Provincial Level Biology. In some Colleges the Advanced Level Biology is a prerequisite to Provincial Biology but at the majority of the Colleges this is not the case and Advanced Biology may not be offered because of low student numbers.

Dave Owens noted concerns with the web CT courses from BCOU which are being run at the Colleges under the numbering system in place at the College offering the BCOU web course. As the content differs sufficiently this was a concern for all the College Reps present and it was decided to bring this issue forward to the Committee as a whole for discussion. With respect to this concern the following motion was proposed:

MOVED by Gordon McIntyre:

All articulated courses, including on-line and distance education course, have “hands on” laboratory skills as delineated in the ABE Articulation Handbook for Advanced and Provincial Biology.

SECONDED: John Field PASSED unanimously

There was one Provincial Level course brought forward for articulation by Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (Biol. 060). The Biology sub-committee had some concerns regarding the depth of coverage for some of the Core units, the number of organ systems covered in the Human Biology section, and the emphasis given to laboratory work. As there was no representative present from NVIT, it was difficult to grant full articulation to the course. It appeared that the majority of the topics were covered and so a status of “Articulation Pending” was assigned for the course until the committee’s concerns are addressed. If the course is adjusted to reflect these concerns prior to the ABE Steering Committee Meeting at the end of April the course can be fully articulated.

It was also noted that there were several Colleges with no reps at the meeting: Camosun, College of the Rockies, and University College of the Fraser Valley. ______

Minutes of the Chemistry Sub-Committee Meeting

Attending: John Pacheco, Jim Funk, Skye Richards, Roland Moutal, Jeanette Landry, Ken Nash, Lee Emery, Jane Horton, Derek Knox, Sandra Friesen, Lyle Olsen, Glenda Hunter, Rick Brand, Jane Horton, Tom McBee

Three courses were put forward for articulation. Nicola Valley Institute of Technology submitted Chemistry 050 as an Advanced Level course and a recommendation was made that it be accepted as such. Similarly, Nicola Valley Institute of Technology’s Chemistry 060 was accepted at the Provincial Level. The Castlegar campus of Selkirk College submitted Chemistry 080 for inclusion in the grid at the Advanced Level. This course was not recommended for articulation. It is hoped that the course can be resubmitted and approved prior to the Steering Committee meeting in April.

The sub-committee felt that these courses were taught in a short amount of time and this led to a discussion of the hours allocated to the teaching of courses. It was felt that this may be a topic of discussion for next year as more private colleges come on stream.

The issuing or credit for institutions utilizing BC Campus was discussed. It was noted that the college utilizing BC Campus is responsible for issuing the credit and ensuring that their course meets articulation requirements.

Roland Moutal brought a copy of a “course companion” he has written for the Provincial Level so that students need not purchase a textbook. Roland also distributed the first chapter. It was felt that the depth and breadth of the material did constitute a textbook. The companion is available through the bookstore at Vancouver Community College and each of the 8 chapters cost approximately twelve dollars.

Glenda Hunter distributed a stoichiometry exam she had found that asked students explain their work. It was felt that this would encourage a deeper understanding of the topic.

Lyle Olsen distributed a research paper assignment he uses at the Advanced Level “Adopt an Element”

7 Draft – Appendixes to the Minutes of 2004 Science Articulation Working Committee

Minutes of the General Science Sub-Committee Meeting

Attending: Liz Ritch, Karen Burns, Allison Alder, Peter Robbins, Gary Lawrence, Richard Farley, Dave Owens, Dan Chetner, John Field, Eric Villeneuve, Shiona Northway.

The meeting began with a review of Thursday's round table discussion of General Science. It was noted that every College differs but nearly all the Colleges have some strategy in place to bridge students from the Intermediate to Advanced Level sciences. Some have Directed Studies, others have prerequisites of Intermediate Science and some have in-house courses. For some Colleges, having trouble raising the profile of Intermediate Science with their Administration, it was suggested that Jeannie Cockell at the Institute of Indigenous Studies might be able to provide some assistance in the matter.

Articulation:

Two courses were put forward for articulation from Nicola Valley Institute of Technology. NVIT submitted an Intermediate General Science course( Intemediate Science 040) and a Provincial level General Science course( Provincial General Science 061). Both were turned down due to lack of detail in the course outline. Both courses will be considered in the future if more detail can be supplied.

The sub-committee suggested the college, seeking articulation, should send a representative to the articulation meeting to answer questions about the course.

Kwantlen is re-organizing its course numbering, so ALL of the ABE science courses are changing their numbers/acronyms. The content of these courses has not changed. The new listings for Kwantlen's Intermediate General Science courses are ABES 001 and SCIP 1010.

Concerns:

Representatives from College of the Rockies and Camosun were missing. They should be invited back to the meetings.

ABEABC Annual Meeting will be held at NVIT in Merritt, April 27th - 30th.
