HOLMES OF HORRY 12 COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH 13 BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER MUCH HAPPINESS IN THE 14 DAYS AHEAD. 15 16 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly 17 are delighted to learn that Mary C. Holmes of Horry County will 18 celebrate her one hundredth birthday on March 27, 2014; and 19 20 Whereas, the fifth of eight children born to Cad and Nellie Kidd 21 Corbitt, Mary Alice Gertrude “Mamie” Corbitt came into this 22 world on March 27, 1914, when the twentieth century was still in 23 its youth, and she has been witness to nearly all the incredible 24 changes and developments that have come to this nation from that 25 time into the second decade of the twentyfirst century; and 26 27 Whereas, the Horry County native was educated in her hometown 28 of Burgess, where the Bible was considered the most important 29 book one should learn to read; and 30 31 Whereas, on December 11, 1937, the young Mary married Albert 32 Holmes (now deceased), God blessing their union with eleven 33 children, of whom Cad, Florence, Jasper, Harry, Larry, Margaret, 34 and Gary are still living. In addition, Mrs. Holmes raised two 35 grandchildren as her own. To her beloved family, she is the living 36 legend of six generations; and 37 38 Whereas, in addition to serving her family as a housewife, during 39 her working years she served as a housekeeper for several 40 individuals and businesses and worked beside her husband in the 41 tobacco and cotton fields. The Holmeses grew their own produce 42 and ate from the garden and animals they raised on their farm; and

[4949] 2 1 2 Whereas, this woman of faith serves her God at Saint James 3 United Methodist Church in Burgess, where some of her offices 4 have included Mother of the Church, choir member, member of the 5 steward board, and usher. Further, she is a member of the Eastern 6 Star Loyal Chapter #226; and 7 8 Whereas, Mrs. Holmes’s favorite Scripture is Psalm 23; her 9 favorite hymn, “Jesus Is Mine.” Her hobbies over the years have 10 included crocheting, knitting, sewing, and working crossword 11 puzzles; and 12 13 Whereas, to honor her at this very special time in her life, on 14 Saturday, March 22, 2014, family members and friends will join 15 with her to celebrate her one hundredth birthday at the Myrtle 16 Beach Air Force Base recreation center; and 17 18 Whereas, the General Assembly is proud to honor this truly lovely 19 lady in commemorating her one hundredth birthday, and the 20 members join with her family and friends in congratulating her on 21 reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore, 22 23 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 24 concurring: 25 26 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 27 resolution, congratulate Mary C. Holmes of Horry County on the 28 occasion of her one hundredth birthday and wish her much 29 happiness in the days ahead. 30 31 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to 32 Mary C.
