Electronic Portfolios of Out-of-Class Learning using Wordpress

You can have your own Wordpress site or you can have a shared site for a field study course or for a project. Hampshire hosts a Wordpress site, so your work does not have to be on a public site or even open to the whole world if you don’t want it to be.

You can have more static pages, or a blog or both. Here is an example that Asha Kinney, our Assistant Director of IT: Technology for Teaching and Learning at Hampshire College, has created about a fake trip to Paris:

Example: http://sites.hampshire.edu/demo/

Note the 3 pages (home; hopes, goals, and dreams; and final reflection) and the blog (trip blog). Blog entries can be tagged and categorized as she has done her or they can be by date.

More about Hampshire Wordpress sites:

Domains A Wordpress site on Hampshire's servers can't use a custom domain (www.ashakinney.com) but you could have your domain re-direct. The address is always something like sites.hampshire.edu/ashakinney

Clarification on the levels of privacy- a site can be: 1. Public to the world 2. Anyone with a Hampshire log in 3. Specific Hampshire users -BUT- this requires remembering to set each page and post to a certain visibility setting so is not as simple as I thought 1. Also- files and media used in the site are not protected, so if somehow someone found the direct link they could in theory gain access (not likely, but technically possible)

Themes You can select the theme you want for your site. Here are some options: HampTheme example: https://sites.hampshire.edu/shews/

Hampshire White example: https://sites.hampshire.edu/ci-lab/

HYC example: http://sites.hampshire.edu/hyc/

Requesting a Site If someone wants a site, send Asha the following info at [email protected] :  The desired site address - in other words, what do you want to come after "sites.hampshire.edu": e.g. sites.hampshire.edu/yoursitenamehere . Could be your name, username, initials, whatever. If and when we roll this out to more students we will likely come up with a naming convention or use usernames I'd think.  The name of the site as it appears on the Wordpress site in big letters at the top. You can always change this later.  What theme you want to use (see examples above, we'll need to get them more info!)
