National Core Arts Standards to launch in June 4 webinar The National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS) will launch the 2014 National Core Arts Standards in a streaming webinar on Wednesday, June 4, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. EDT. The event will feature interviews with a broad spectrum of arts education providers, including certified educators, teaching artists, administrators, national/state policy makers, and arts education advocates. The new standards for dance, media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts were created by seventy writers representing NCCAS’s arts education member organizations. More than 6,000 educators, teaching artists, parents, students and state and local focus groups offered input in four national reviews that helped shaped the final standards. The PreK-12 grade-by-grade standards are intended to guide educators seeking to provide quality arts education for America’s students, define artistic literacy, and support 21st century skills and college and career readiness. The arts standards will be housed in the NCCAS website atwww.nationalartsstandards.org. A key feature of the interactive website is the option for teachers and other users to create customized standards handbooks that match their curriculum and students’ learning needs. All are welcome to join the National Core Arts Standards webinar launch. To participate, register athttp://tinyurl.com/lrsajg9. Sign up will be limited to the first 3,000 registrants. Highlights of the webinar will be available on the website at a later date.

Arts Education for America’s Students: A Shared Endeavor The State Education Agency Directors of Arts Education (SEADAE), in partnership with 12 national arts and education organizations, has released Arts Education for America’s Students, a Shared Endeavor , a statement outlining the importance of high quality arts education and those responsible for providing it to students. A Shared Endeavor articulates the purpose and value of arts education in the balanced curriculum of all students, asserts its place as a core academic subject area, and details how sequential arts learning can be supported by rigorous national standards and assessments. The statement, created over a 12-month period by the endorsing organizations, responds to the alarming marginalization of quality arts education in America’s schools in recent years, as funding, staffing, and school time has increasingly focused on tested subject areas. Acknowledging the long history and support for arts education by public and private partners, A Shared Endeavor defines what quality arts education looks like at the local level, encourages partnerships, and calls on organizations and individuals to actively support and promote: Policies and resources for arts education.
Access to arts education for all students.
Collaboration between school-based arts educators, other subject area teachers, and community-based artists and arts educators.
Long-term advocacy partnership between all providers of arts education.

V.FOR YOUR INFORMATION
On behalf of Trent J. Danowski, Office of Professional Preparation at the WVDE:
In a continued effort to support all West Virginia educators on the new Educator Evaluation System, the Department of Education would like to offer the following information:
Congratulations are in order for all the educators in the state of West Virginia! You are quickly approaching the conclusion of the first year of full state implementation of the online Educator Evaluation System. Thank you for your professionalism in completing what, for many of you, was a new method of evaluation. I have heard many great stories over the course of this year regarding educators assisting each other in navigating the online components of the evaluation system. Your communication and collaboration helped to ensure that this evaluation cycle is a successful one.
For Classroom Teachers who have chosen to use WESTEST data as the Results Data for one or more of your student learning goals – your summative evaluation cannot be completed prior to June 1st of this school year. You need to re-visit your goals for this school year in the fall of the 2014-2015 school year, once WESTEST data is available for review. At that time, insert the appropriate Goal Results information into the online system. Then notify your evaluator that your student learning goals are completed and the completion of your 2014 summative evaluation may commence.
Attention Evaluators: Here is the proper Order of Events when completing the summative evaluations of your educators:
1. Evaluator and Educator hold the summative evaluation conference. 2. Evaluator completes online summative evaluation of Educator. Evaluator checks the “Finalize” option at the bottom of evaluation and then clicks SAVE. 3. Educator enters WOW evaluation module. Educator may now enter an Addendum to their summative evaluation if desired. Educator “Accepts” evaluation and clicks SAVE. 4. Fall 2014: School-wide growth data will be uploaded into the evaluation system. 5. Fall 2014: Educators re-visit their 2014 evaluations and complete a Final Acceptance of their evaluation.
Upcoming Educator Evaluation System Dates:
By June 1, 2014 – Evaluators conduct summative conferences with classroom teachers and school counselors, then complete and finalize summative evaluations for those educators.
By June 1, 2014 – Educators re-visit 2014 summative evaluations which have been finalized by their principal. Educators accept the 2014 summative evaluation. By July 1, 2014 - Evaluators conduct summative conferences with school principals, then complete and finalize evaluations for school principals. Principals then accept the 2014 summative evaluation.
