RCC Railway Station Parking Overview

RCC Station Parking Audit - Twickenham Location - Google Map Link Google Streetview - Link Last Update - October 2010

Station Overview The second largest station in the Borough, there is significant demand for cycling parking and a significant number of cycles stolen. Demand exceeds supply of cycle stands significantly. Access could also be improved and there is a need for better signage of cycle routes. See also the Twickenham Town Centre Permeability Audit carried out by RCC in 2009. The upcoming redevelopment of Twickenham station needs to consider the needs of cyclists and the recommendations presented here.

Figure 1 - Parking outside Twickenham station - note cycles locked to railings on left due to lack of available car spaces

Accessibility of platform for bicycles: Access to platforms is via a long stairway with no ‘wheeling channels’

Accessibility to and from station from surrounding area: Access to station coming from direction of Twickenham town centre is poor. See figures 2 and 3 below. This is due to buses using mandatory cycle lane on railway bridge, location of bus stop (buses overtaking cyclist and pulling in, buses pulling out) and crossing

Richmond Cycling Campaign Figure 2 - The route from Twickenham town centre to the station. Note how the mandatory cycle lane (continuous white line) stops just at the bus stop. This lane is frequently ignored by bus drivers.

Figure 3 - Looking towards Twickenham town centre from outside the station. The existing crossing could be converted to allow cyclists to cross (examples of this in Kingston)

Suggested improvements: - Provide a proper continuous segregated cycle lane with a physical boundary for cyclists crossing railway bridge (Kingston Bridge provides a good example of what can be achieved) - Provide a Toucan crossing to allow cyclists to cycle across road to access station front parking - Provide additional covered spaces to meet demand - Provide ‘wheeling channel’ on stairway access to platforms (see Cycling England - Wheeling Channels)
