JOB PURPOSE: To represent the life and mission of the Church of England as part of a multifaith Chaplaincy team at Oxford Brookes University. To offer a ministry of collaborative support to the University in the life and work of students and staff of all faiths and none.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES 1. To be a visible and approachable Anglican presence, accessible to all members of the University. 2. To pray for the life and work of the University. 3. To support the work of the Ecumenical Chaplain in developing and delivering multifaith Chaplaincy services across all Oxford Brookes campuses. 4. To assist the work of the Chaplaincy Team in organising and promoting an appropriately regular, varied and accessible programme of worship and prayer, study and reflection. 5. To assist the work of the Chaplaincy Team in organising and promoting occasions for deliberation on matters of spiritual, ethical and theological concern by the University and local community. 6. To offer support and counsel to those in personal and spiritual difficulty, and guidance and encouragement towards continuing growth and maturity. 7. To develop and maintain contacts with local Anglican Churches and to act as a Diocesan Vocations Adviser in Oxford.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. To be a visible and approachable Anglican presence, accessible to all members of the University.  To be the named Anglican contact in the Oxford Brookes University Chaplaincy.  To be available for students, staff, and visitors of any faith or no faith for pastoral care, spiritual support, and hospitality.  To make use of Chaplaincy or other University facilities to hold events, where possible.  To follow Oxford Brookes University policies and procedures at all times whilst serving or representing the University.

2. To pray for the life and work of the University  To nurture your own relationship with God through prayer.  To offer prayer support to the University, and Chaplaincy colleagues.  To support the prayer ministry offered by the Chaplaincy Team. 1 3. To support the work of the Ecumenical Chaplain in developing and delivering multifaith Chaplaincy services across all Oxford Brookes campuses.  To be available for Chaplaincy Team, Multifaith Advisory Board, and other relevant University meetings.  To be able to work across all Oxford Brookes University campuses (Headington, Wheatley, Harcourt Hill, and Swindon).

4. To assist the work of the Chaplaincy Team in organising and promoting an appropriately regular, varied and accessible programme of worship and prayer, study and reflection.  To meet with Chaplaincy colleagues at team meetings to organise a holistic programme of events to benefit the student and staff communities at Oxford Brookes University.  To offer or assist with small group study, reflection, prayer and worship, including the Eucharist.  To assist the Ecumenical Chaplain and the Chaplaincy Team in leading University commemorations and events (e.g. Remembrance Day, memorials, Christmas services).

5. To assist the work of the Chaplaincy Team in organising and promoting occasions for deliberation on matters of spiritual, ethical and theological concern by the University and local community.  To assist the Ecumenical Chaplain and Chaplaincy Team in organising events and lectures aimed at students and staff.  To support the organisation of relevant Public Events (e.g. the annual Chaplaincy Lecture).

6. To offer support and counsel to those in personal and spiritual difficulty, and guidance and encouragement towards continuing growth and maturity.

 To be available in person or virtually (e.g. by email, phone) regularly to offer support to any who seek it.

7. To develop and maintain contacts with local Anglican Churches.  To maintain good relations with parishes in which staff and students live and / or work

DIMENSIONS The Anglican Chaplain will work alongside the Ecumenical Chaplain and Chaplaincy colleagues of all faiths to provide spiritual and pastoral support to staff and students across the three Oxford campuses of Oxford Brookes University, with the possibility of occasional visits to Swindon (dependent on need).

PLANNING & ORGANISATION The Anglican Chaplain will work with the Ecumenical Chaplain to plan events that form part of a cohesive programme for each academic year.

DECISIONS The Anglican Chaplain will attend Chaplaincy Team and Multifaith Advisory Board meetings and support these meetings in making decisions and forming policy for the Chaplaincy or the wider University.

PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS - KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Specification Essential Desirable

Ordained Anglican Priest of at Counselling or spiritual 1. Education/Training least three years standing direction training

i. Teaching experience A minimum of 3 years’ 2. Relevant Experience ii. Experience of interfaith experience in pastoral ministry work or of working within a multifaith context i. An ability to work in an ecumenical and multifaith team Experience of working in ii. A passion for living out and Further / Higher Education, 3. 3 GENERAL INFORMATION

Remuneration Salary scale – 0.5 of current Oxford Diocesan Incumbent Scale

Hours of work 18.5 hours per week, with regular agreed hours and days. On occasions, the nature of the work may involve the postholder carrying out work outside of normal working hours. The postholder is expected to show flexibility for these occasional events at weekends or evenings

Place of work Oxford Brookes University Campuses

Holidays 25 days per year paid leave (pro rata), to include Bank Holidays and University concessionary days. In addition, the ODBF gives three discretionary days, namely: Ascension Day, Maundy Thursday and Christmas Eve as holidays to its employees.

Pension Church of England Funded Pensions Scheme (CEFPS) for clergy Provision

Probation 6 months with regular reviews period

Notice period 3 months from either side, or the statutory minimum (whichever is greater).

Circumstances  Genuine Occupational Requirement (GOR) that the postholder is Ordained Anglican Clergy

 Travel to national and regional training and networking events

 May be required to work evenings and weekend, occasional overnight stays in relation to training

It is the practice of the ODBF to review job descriptions annually to ensure that they relate to the role as then being performed or to incorporate whatever reasonable changes that have occurred over time or are being proposed. This review will be carried out by the line manager in consultation with the post-holder before any changes are implemented. The post-holder is expected to participate fully in such discussions and implementation.
