We received contact hours through the Metro MN ONS Chapter

Megan was diagnosed with Melanoma at 18

Support Tan free Teens Submitted by Brenda Eveslage RN, BSN, OCN Michele Held and I had the privileged to visit the capital on March 5, 2014 with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACSCAN). We were there to raise awareness of the dangers of teens tanning. We received contact hours through the Metro MN ONS Chapter and learned how to be more involved politically, at no cost! We also got a shout out for out WCMONS chapter! We had a great day meeting other volunteers from the ACS and cancer survivors, all wanting to make their senators and house representatives aware of the importance of having laws in place to protect our teens from tanning. Melanoma rates are rising. While some cancers are declining, the incidence of melanoma has doubled since 1988, and has increased among young women. Tanning beds are considered a class 1 carcinogen, which is considered the same as e cigarettes. Did you know the use of tanning beds before the age of 35 increases lifetime risk of melanoma by 59%? Damage from tanning beds is cumulative. The earlier a person starts tanning, the greater the risk of melanoma. According to Minnesota Student Survey 1 out of 3 eleventh-grade non-Hispanic/white girls in M.N. reported using tanning beds. Half of them reported using tanning beds more than 10 times per year. One of the guest speakers Megan, who is in her earlier 20’s, was a teen, who used tanning beds all the time because she and her mother thought it was safe. She used the tanning beds before ice skating competitions, dances and all during the winter to keep her base tan. Megan did not know the dangers of tanning. She was told it was safer to keep a “base Tan”, and at 18 was diagnosed with melanoma. We had private apt to meet with our district reps. It was a great experience and I would recommend more nurses to attend this event each year, and get involved to learn how your government is voting to protect our teens. Join your fellow advocates to: Learn about new policies such as tanning, e-cigarettes, palliative care, MN sure and much more. Participate in fun, effective and easy advocacy actions that really make a difference in the fight against cancer. Meet awesome people from your community who want to make cancer history. Happy September members, As I write this I am thinking of all of the change that has taken place over the last 3 years that I have been acting as President elect and President of our local WCMONS chapter. Change is inevitable and as a chapter, the members are tasked with the challenge of adapting to the change also. National has moved to a National collection of local dues, this has increased our local chapter members from 55 to 143 members. National ONS has moved to an all electronic version of communicating our WCMONS updates and newsletters with our local chapter members. Also we have said good bye to some of our friends on the board and welcomed new board members with new ideas and new energy. Indeed there have been many changes. National ONS has moved to collecting all local dues for several years now. This move has made a profound change on our local chapter. We have gone from a membership of about 55 members which had us in the medium chapter category, to 143 members which has us in the large chapter category. This change has given the chapter the opportunity to engage the members and capture the ideas and creativity of a whole new constituency of nurses. The challenge is how to get all of these nurses engaged and active at the chapter level. This is a big change indeed. National ONS has spent a lot of time developing the virtual community to deliver an all electronic version of communicating our WCMONS updates and newsletters with our local chapter members. Gone are the days of local chapters having and maintaining email lists. The local chapters no longer have an email list of members. With this change the power to receive communication from the local chapter has been given to the member themselves. Members can opt out of receiving communication; members can also go to the virtual community and select to receive communication from the local chapter as well. Currently as of June we have 102 members receiving updates and newsletters from the board. If someone you know is not receiving the emails from the local chapter and should be, suggest they go to the ONS WCMONS Virtual community website and check the box to receive these emails. Only the members can

manage this for themselves. The board can only direct them to the website. Communication is key to the success of any organization; let’s make this change work for our chapter! The year has also brought changes to the board as well. We have said good bye to some of our friends on the board and welcomed new board members with new ideas and new energy. Deb Corrigan our President elect has resigned her board position in 3 May. We are very lucky to be able to welcome Jeanette Pasche, RN-BC, ONC, CEN as our new President elect. Jeanette will take over as President starting January 1 2015. We will welcome her energy to the board and all of her new perspectives. Changes have definitely taken place over the last few years that I have been in my position. The chapter dues through National, one way to communicate with members through the Virtual community, and new faces. Change is good and necessary for the growth of our local WCMONS.

WCMONS Treasurer’s Report Spring 2014 2013 was a very balanced year financially for our West Central Minnesota ONS Chapter. Our total revenues for 2013 were $8292.88 and our total expenses were $8139.15. We ended the year with a total of $20,469.80 in our treasury. Our Board members believe that $20,000 is a very ample reserve for an association of approximately 100 oncology nurses. In keeping with the goals of our organization, 2013 was a very we are again offering scholarships in 2014 to members who want to attend ONS balanced year Congress in May or other national oncology conferences throughout the year and to financially for our members who want to go back to school to further their nursing education. We are West Central also offering reimbursements to members for their first year ONS dues and for Minnesota ONS members taking OCN preparation classes and passing their OCN certification exams. I Chapter would encourage members who fit any of these categories to check out our WCMONS website and/or contact Jeanette Pasche, our President-elect, for information about how to apply for these scholarships and/or reimbursements. I believe 2014 will be another very successful financial year for WCMONS.
