North Town Primary School A guide to the curriculum for Parents/Carers of children in Pippins Summer term 1 2017 We are fast approaching the last term of the academic year and the Pippins have had a brilliant summer term so far. This term we are trying to support your child to progress in all areas of their learning and guide them with any areas they are finding challenging.

Our aim is to move your child on in their reading and get them to their age related expectation by the end of the year. We have a very busy term ahead as your child gets ready for year 1. This term your child will receive a school report and get to meet the teacher they will be with in September. Each term the school will have an overarching theme/ area of learning for our topic.

This term the whole school topic is Arts, we are looking at music and art. We are going to be focusing on Textures, creating collages using soft, hard and rough materials. We will also look at water and how materials can change when put into water. Please feel free to Creative experiment at home and take lots of pictures to share with the whole class. Development We are going to be exploring with materials such as clay and paint. Using a mixture of tools to create changes to clay and how they can use these tools safely. Reading

To support your child to move to the next book band level it is important to read lots at Literacy home, practice blending and segmenting their phase 2 and phase 3 sounds. Being able to recognise tricky words and read them in their book is another skill they need to be learning at home to reinforce what we have done in the classroom.

Here is a list of the tricky words also known as irregular words. He She I Me We Was Be You They All Are My Her To The No Go Into Your child needs to be able to retell the story they have read and answer literal and inferential questions to be able to progress with their reading. We practice these skills in the classroom but the more they work at home the further they can progress.

Phonics We are recapping phase 3 sounds. Please keep practicing tricky words (words you cannot sound out), diagraphs (two letters that make one sound) and trigraphs three letters that make one sound).

We will be learning phase 4 tricky words and common words. It is important for your child to be able to spell these words to support them with achieving expectations for the academic year.

Bug Club This is a fantastic online resource where you can access additional reading books and activities to engage in with your child at home. Please use this site with your child and write a comment in your child’s reading record if they choose to read one of these books. When you receive a reading record your child’s log in details will be inside. This term we are recapping the learning your child needs more support with, we will look at number as well as shape, space and measure. We will look at halving and sharing, adding, subtracting sums, more and less, number bonds and 3D shapes.

Every child will be practicing number formations, please practice this at home. Mathematics We will be using the iPad this term and encouraging the children to use bug club and various online reading games and tools to support them with their reading. The Technology children have regular access to the interactive white board which we use daily for phonics and maths games. This is a fantastic resources to reinforce learning we do as a whole class.

We will be looking at things we need for the beach. We always use songs to help tie in with classwork too. Here are some entertaining songs about water and musical instruments Spanish We will use a song about the beach https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=W13Wl3FPHTU , and sea https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5kMrNg4Blw .

Communication and You can put in photos, drawings, tickets, objects, posters, cards or anything that Language Me and My World’ supports your child to talk about their experience or interest.

Routines

The children need a piece of fruit and a drink every day for school.

Check names on your child’s uniform, especially jumpers as this time of year is warm and they often take their jumpers off at lunchtime. It will make its way back to your child if it is all labeled.

Now the weather is warm, send your child to school with a hat to protect them from the sun. We are unable to apply sun lotion at school but it is worth applying this before they come to school. We encourage the children to go into the shade during times they are outside on hot, sunny days and drinking lots of water is encouraged throughout the school day.
