HOUSING OF VERTEBRATE ANIMALS The College of New Jersey Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

DIRECTIONS FOR USING THIS FORM Background

The purpose of this questionnaire is to assure that adequate procedures are in place for the daily observation and care of animals, and when species have special requirements.

The questionnaire is an attempt at making it as easy as possible for you to tell us how you maintain your animals. There are no right answers (yet!). Feel free to provide additional information. We welcome your comments and suggestions.

Word Processing Instructions

1. This form will format your answers in a different typeface than the text of the form itself. When printed, it is much easier to distinguish answers and questions. On the screen, your answers will appear in color.

2. This form uses advanced Word for Windows formatting such as styles, tables and character formatting

3. This file is formatted to make your answers appear differently than the text of the form itself. To move through the form, use the Mouse, Arrow Keys or the scroll bar. DO NOT USE THE “ENTER KEY” TO ADD A LINE BELOW A QUESTION. If you do this, you will retain the formatting of the question in your answer. To add an additional paragraph in your answer, do use the “Enter Key” and another paragraph will begin.

4. It is recommended that you work with all “non-printing” characters showing. (Tools, Options, and on the View Tab under non-printing characters, select All.) When you do this, spaces between words appear as dots. Tabs appear as arrows and “paragraph marks” appear as a “¶”. Red dots and red paragraph marks indicate where you can enter information. As the name implies, non-printing characters do not appear in “Print Preview” or when you document is printed. Rationale:

All investigators are required to provide for the care of all animals which they maintain on the college campus. This policy outlines the conditions under which this is appropriate and establishes guidelines to be met by investigators so that the IACUC can assure that animals receive proper care and that the animals do not pose a hazard or inconvenience to people in the building in which they are kept.

Concerns about animals outside of centralized animal facilities 1. Centralized animal facilities provide controlled environments with temperature control, light cycle control, adequate ventilation systems separate from those supplying “people areas”, security, proper facilities for storage of food and waste, pest control programs, cagewashing facilities, etc. Heating is provided during long holiday breaks. Animals are observed 365 days a year. Housing areas outside of animal facilities may not be able to provide all of these elements. 2. The IACUC must know about all animals on campus. 3. Experience shows that the quality of care provided in investigator labs can vary tremendously. 4. Animals must be observed frequently, including during weekends and holidays. Generally this means daily. 5. Animals, animal odors and allergens must not adversely affect people in the building. 6. Animal care practices must meet all standards as set forth in applicable regulations and guidelines. The IACUC must be able to assure such standards are met.

Requirements for housing vertebrate animals outside centralized animal facilities 1. Standards of care must meet all applicable requirements. 2. The facility must be reasonably accessible to authorized personnel from the IACUC and outside inspectors or site visitors. 3. Animal use must be reported to the IACUC when requested. 4. The investigator must provide a detailed written SOP outlining the animal care practices to be used. 5. Protocol approval will be conditional on approval of the husbandry SOP.

Return Completed Questionnaire with a copy of an animal care checklist to the Chair of the TCNJ Animal Care and Use Committee. This should accompany a copy of the Animal Care and Use protocol as an attachment. Send to: Dr. Andrew Leynes, [email protected] SPECIAL ANIMAL HUSBANDRY PROCEDURES The College of New Jersey

B. Animal Environment, Housing, and Management (taken from AAALAC Description information) Not all questions will be relevant to your situation. Few protocols will need to respond to all questions. If a question is not relevant to your protocol, enter “Not applicable” or “N/A”. A separate outline is available for aquatic species.

This outline is designed to give a person not familiar with your animal husbandry program a comprehensive picture of how the animals are cared for. It may be viewed by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. The basis for this outline is the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. To view the full text of the Guide go to: http://oacu.od.nih.gov/regs/guide/guide3.htm . Any procedures at variance with the recommendations of the Guide should be described in your animal care and use protocol and must be approved as part of that protocol. The following outline is taken from the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC, Intl) husbandry description for inclusion in accreditation submissions. AAALAC uses the Guide as the basis for minimum standards. For assistance in developing procedures and/or completing the form, contact Elizabeth Dodemaide at 732 445-4168 or [email protected].
