“Call for Submissions for Young Reels”

Your school is invited to be a part of the Young Reels Film Festival

Caledon Public Library wants your students to be involved in this exciting film festival! This year will be the fifth that we have held this exciting contest that culminates in an evening which celebrates films created by the youth in our community. We call this night the Young Reels Screening and it takes place at Empire Theatres in Bolton. We are calling all aspiring directors and filmmakers and offering them the chance to see their films on the big screen! Last year saw students come together from Humberview Secondary School, Mayfield Secondary School, Robert F Hall Catholic Secondary School and Orangeville District Secondary School to view diverse films from different genres all telling different stories. The night was a huge success and we are hoping this year will be even better! Students are invited to create a short film using drama, documentary, animation, claymation or any other genre. A chance to make a statement or to be heard; their story told in their voice. This year once again we are hoping to get a professional from the film industry to speak with the attendees and a number of prizes will be awarded the night of the screenings.

Please take a moment to let me know whether or not your school will be participating and please adhere to the submission dates. This year Empire is insisting on having them that far in advance, something that I have no control over. The attached submission sheet should be read over carefully and filled out completely. We are very much looking forward to another great event!

Young Reels Submission Form Please note that completed contest permission and privacy waiver forms must accompany the film in order for it to be considered for festival screening. Directors are responsible for getting permission forms from all onscreen actors. Remember copyright issues for non-original music and also please think about the fact that this event is for all ages when creating content of the film.

Prizes will be awarded for best direction, best special effects, best social service message, critic’s choice and audience favourite.

Directors: Must be between 14-18 years of age at the time of submission

Format: DVD – One film per DVD with no menus in Standard Definition 16 x 9 aspect ratio (864 x 486) This is absolute.

Length: Up to eight minutes

Submissions: If you are submitting as a school, you can submit as many films as you like though screening will be subject to approval by Caledon Public Library. In the past, we have screened every film received.

Film Submission Deadline: January 25.2014 This is absolute.
