Detailed description of the The intern will have the opportunity to work with global datasets administered by the internship project(s); Species programme, including the UNEP-WCMC Species Database and the CITES tasks assigned Trade Database, while becoming familiar with the main global multilateral agreements administered by the United Nations for the protection of Species -- in particular the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and The Convention on the Protection of Migratory Species of Fauna (CMS).

These databases are used on a daily basis by Secretariats, National Authorities and the European Commission, amongst others.

Once the intern has become acquainted with the structure and functionality of the databases, she or he will support the identification, specification and development of web-based and database applications that address the needs of clients and users. The particular tasks will be chosen by the intern and the supervisor according to the qualifications or personal interests of the intern.

The resulting work is expected to provide a relevant contribution to the implementation of Multilateral Environmental Agreements, and to the protection of species at national and international levels.

Required Qualifications

Academic qualification Preferably an MSc, but at least a very good BSc in an Information Technology discipline. Confidence in the use and management of databases is also highly desirable.

Subjects Information technology, Computer Science, Programming

Language Skills Fluency in English is indispensable. Fluency in French or Spanish is desirable.

Computer literacy Confident in the use of relevant technology (.Net, ColdFusion, Microsoft SQL Server, HTML, XML). Mircosoft SQL and .Net are the preferred technologies. Training in the use of other software will be provided as part of the internship if necessary.

Internship-related Previous experience of work in an international environment is an advantage. experiences

Additional Experience or interest in the field of enviromental conservation, including taxonomic skills/requirements nomenclature and conservation policy, would be helpful.

Please note that the selected intern will need toapply for an Erasmus scholarship from his/her home university to fund the internship.
