Exceptional Children Pre-Kindergarten Teacher Assistant Job Description

Salary: Northampton County Teacher Assistant Pay Scale

Reports to: Teacher, Principal, Pre-K Coordinator, EC Director

Supervises: N/A

Job Goals: To provide support to the instructional program within assigned Pre- Kindergarten (3 and 5 year olds) classroom with specific responsibility for working with individual and/or small groups of students; and providing clerical support to teacher/s and staff.

Qualifications:

1) High School Diploma or GED and shall hold, or be working toward, a minimum of an Associate Degree in early childhood education or child development (ECE/CD) or a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential. Teacher assistants working toward the Associate Degree or CDA shall make progress by completing a minimum of six documented semester hours per year; or

2) Meet the employment requirements outlined by the federal “No Child Left Behind”(NCLB) legislation, and have one of the following: a. Six documented semester hours of coursework in early childhood education, or b. Two years of work experience in an early childhood setting.

Performance Responsibilities:

 Understand and follow the established laws, rules and regulations of Northampton County Schools as outlined in the Employee Handbook.  Serve as a role model to students and colleagues in actions, words, attire, and commitment.  Treat students and colleagues with dignity and respect at all times.  Maintain confidentiality of all student information.  Interact with students in an age-appropriate manner that demonstrates an appropriate understanding of each student’s individual needs, abilities, and disabilities.  Carry out all physical care routines for students as indicated on their Health Plans and/or Individual  Education Plans (IEPs), including, but not limited to, personal hygiene and administration of medication.  Collect and record student data.  Be physically capable of standing, walking, kneeling, and reaching.  Provide individualized and group instruction based on teacher plans.  Demonstrate a basic level of computer proficiency needed to assist classroom teacher and students.  Set up and use assistive technology and augmentative communication devices to assist students with school related activities.  Assist students with daily living skills (i.e., toileting, feeding, cleanliness, etc).  Provide close student supervision in all school settings.  Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.  Performs general clerical tasks (e.g. laminating, making posters making copies, bulletin boards, filing, newsletters, etc.) for the purpose of helping the teacher get instructional materials ready.  Maintain student safety in all school settings and activities.  Possess manual skills for general housekeeping in classroom.  Maintains classroom equipment, work area, and manual and electronic files and records (e.g. clean/bleach tables, sign-in/sign-out logs, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items; providing written reference; providing a safe learning environment; and/or meeting mandated requirements.  Assist in the organization and implementation of all school related activities.  Perform routine duties as required by teacher and/or administrator(s).  Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the principal or designee.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Time-Limited: Effective 4-24-17 – End of 16-17 School Year – NO BENEFITS

EVALUATION:  Performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.  Principal and classroom teachers will provide performance evaluations.  At the conclusion of the school year or as needed, a school administrator will provide each Teacher Assistant with a summative evaluation.  Attendance/Tardy guidelines: Excessive late arrivals or absences can lead to disciplinary actions up to and including a recommendation of termination of employment to the Superintendent.
