Canadian Propaganda Posters WWII

Brent True This activity is designed for students taking Modern History 113. This activity will be presented to students after the conclusion of the unit on WWII. The reason for doing this activity at the end of the unit is to allow students to have an understanding of the events leading up to the war, how the war unfolded and how the Allies ending up defeating the Axis of Evil They will use the knowledge they have learned from the unit to complete this activity.

Rationale:

1. Students will study Canadian propaganda posters as a means of developing a better understanding of how and why Canada became and was involved in WWII. 2. Students will be actively engaged in group and class discussions about what they feel the posters symbolize and why these types of propaganda posters were used during WWII. 3. Students will view a variety of posters that will allow them to form a better understanding of what it meant to live during the war and how all members of Canadian society were expected to help with the war effort. 4. By studying these propaganda posters students will have a visual activity that will allow them to form opinions of what the war effort was about and how the Canadian Government used propaganda posters to rally the entire country behind the war effort. 5. Students will be given a list of questions that will need to be answered as a way of keeping them on track.

Activity:

1. Students will be placed in groups of five. 2. Each group is to study all 10 propaganda posters and reach a consensus of what they feel as a group each poster means, what they symbolizes and why it is important and relevant to WWII. 3. Each group will discuss their thoughts of the posters and prepare a class presentation of what they have decided. 4. Groups will present their findings to the class. 5. There will be class discussion time after all groups have presented and we will come to a class consensus of the meanings and symbols of all the posters.
