SCIENCE AND HORROR FICTION Brave New World Pre-reading response

CLEAR LEARNING TARGET(S):

 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

 Write narratives to develop real or imagined (italics added) experiences or events using effective techniques, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.

 Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive (significant) topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.

DIRECTIONS:

Imagine the following scenario: Society as we know it has collapsed because of mankind’s beliefs, values, immorality, and actions. To prevent a similar collapse you must re-build civilization. What would you do? (Try not to base your ideas only on films such as Equilibrium, The Hunger Games, Divergent, etc. or novels such as The Giver, 1984, Fahrenheit 451, etc.)

 What type of government would you create, and why would this system work more effectively than what existed in the past?  What laws would you put in place, and why would you impose these laws?  How would you enforce the laws to be certain that the citizens followed them?  How you would guarantee that the citizens remain happy at all times so that they do not want to rebel?  Would you change any of the following structures and why or why not: family, class distinctions/class equality, jobs, organized religion, recreation, social interactions, sexual relations?  Would you still allow or encourage individuality, or would you try to make everyone the same? Why?  If you try to establish the uniformity mentioned above, how would you accomplish this with science, technology, and teaching expected and appropriate social behavior?

You do not need to respond to these items in formal essay or even paragraph form. You can use bullet points if you wish. Please just be certain to respond to all of the items as a group. Also, as you write your response, be sure to logically defend your plan and also try to anticipate any counter-arguments from critics who would be able to find flaws in your plans. If you have any questions, please let me know.
