Harriet Lane Clinic Summary

Harriet Lane Clinic Summary:

The Johns Hopkins Children's Center is not only one of the premiere children’s hospitals in the country, but a neighborhood hospital whose mission is to treat all sick children regardless of their financial capabilities. Through the Harriet Lane Clinic (HLC), the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center has provided primary healthcare services to the East Baltimore community since 1912. Our mission is to improve the health of children, adolescents and families in our local community and beyond through leadership in clinical care, education, and scholarship. Over the years the HLC has developed innovative and value-added “wrap around” services not typically found in other primary care clinics. The HLC is a primary care model of one-stop shopping, on-site comprehensive, integrated health home for poor, urban families including:  Physical and mental health and dental care  Developmental and educational screening and assessment  Adolescent clinic  Reproductive health services  Intensive Primary Care program for children and adolescents with HIV  Social work services  Child life services  Project HEAL (Health, Education, Advocacy and Law) legal aid with a full time lawyer  Fitness Circle Program to address childhood obesity  Safety Lane Injury Prevention Center  Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Food and Nutrition Program  Reach Out and Read family literacy program  Adolescent Literacy Program  Healthy Futures tutoring and career counseling programs  Health Leads family resource desk with facilitated linkage to community services

The Clinic’s values align with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) definition of health “as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
