The College Merthyr Tydfil is seeking to appoint a high calibre part-time hourly paid lecturer to deliver AS and A2 Economics at The College Merthyr Tydfil, due to open in September 2013. This is an excellent opportunity to shape and deliver the Economics provision in the brand new college. The successful candidate will be based in the Business and Management Division.

The post will commence in August 2013.

Candidates should be of graduate calibre (or equivalent) and have a recent and successful record of teaching Economics at A level.

1 COLLEGE STRUCTURE

The College Merthyr Tydfil is managed by the Principal and Chief Executive. The Principal and Chief Executive lead a College Executive which comprises the Deputy Principal, Deputy Chief Executive, and Assistant Principals. Each of the Assistant Principals are responsible for managing a cross college area. They also lead one of the faculties which contain foundation degrees, A levels and vocational courses.

The College Executive meet weekly to advise the Principal on key strategic matters within the college.

2 CURRICULUM

The college has developed a detailed curriculum plan to take forward from September 2013 onwards.

As part of this plan, the college proposes to offer a wide range of qualifications covering a broad spectrum of subjects from entry/level 1 through to Level 4 and 5 higher education courses.

At Level 3, the college is proposing to offer over 30 ‘A’ levels.

KEY DEVELOPMENT TIMESCALES

The College Merthyr Tydfil will officially open in September 2013 for year 12 sixth form and college students. Year 13 students will complete their study at their sixth form school during 2013/14 to minimise disruption for them.

Key timescales for development include:

 July 2013 – August 2013 – Building fit-out and occupation

 September 2013 – College opens for Year 12 sixth form, further education and higher education students

 September 2014 – First intake of year 13 pupils

Job Description

1 Job Title: Lecturer – Economics

2 Salary: Hourly paid rate of £22.05 per hour

3 Conditions: Hourly Paid Lecturer’s Contract

4 Responsible to: Head of Business and Management Division

5 Main purpose of job:

Responsible for the preparation and delivery of AS/A2 Economics.

3 6 Key areas of responsibility:

1. Formal scheduled teaching of AS/A2 Economics

2. Development of schemes of work and preparation of learning materials and student assignments

3. Monitoring and assessment of students work, including the production of twice yearly progress reports to be distributed to parents

4. Attendance at annual parents’/carers’ evenings

5. Attendance at key marketing activities, including open evenings

6. Managing student tutorials and providing guidance

7. Management and administration of learning programmes including timely marking of register

8. Supervision of student visit programmes

9. Interviewing prospective students

10. Participation in marketing activities

11. Participation in staff development

12. Adhering to college quality assurance systems

13. Participating in staff appraisal system where appropriate.

14. Adhering to college Health & Safety Policy

15. Work within the college Financial Regulations and other policies and procedures in performing the role

16. Work with the college and schools, where applicable, to ensure that the transition year 2013-2014 is as smooth as possible for both year 12 pupils transferring from schools and year 13 pupils remaining in school.

17. Undertake other duties and responsibilities commensurate with the post and grade as directed by the Head of Division.

Person Specification for Lecturer – Economics
