General Requirements and Competencies:
We seek qualified leadership and board candidates who have the following qualities, skills and abilities:
A commitment to Prince William SHRM and its mission, vision and organizational activities; The ability to devote the necessary time and energy required for the specific leadership positions; Demonstrated leadership abilities and the ability to motivate member volunteers with passion and optimism; Collaborative and group skills, specifically with the ability to work as a team with other Prince SHRM board members, and to build strategic relationships with others as necessary; Communication skills: the ability to fully represent the chapter to current and prospective members and sponsors, and to contribute to board/leadership discussions and decisions in a productive, attentive and respectful manner; The willingness and ability to make a one-year commitment; Membership in good standing with the chapter. Board Position Descriptions:
President-Elect – This is a two-year term. Assist the President in overseeing all the activities of the chapter. In the absence of the President, performs all the Presidential responsibilities. Conduct special projects as assigned by the President. Upon request, assists other officers in performing their responsibilities. Attend (and preside over, if necessary) monthly membership and Board of Directors meetings. Participate in the development and implementation of short- term and long-term strategy planning for the Chapter. Represent the Chapter in the Human Resources community. Minimum time commitment per month: 10-15 hours.
Treasurer - The Treasurer is responsible for the financial affairs of the Chapter. Responsibilities include preparation of financial reports to the Board, arrange the annual examination and audit of the accounts as may be required by the Board, maintain account balances, provide budgets for each committee, generate credit card transaction reports for the Chapter Accountant each month, and perform other duties as the President may determine. Represent the Chapter in the human resources community. Minimum time commitment per month: 5-10 hours.
Secretary - The secretary maintains a record of the bylaws and prepares minutes of all board of directors’ meetings for approval at the following Board meeting. Upon request, assists other officers in performing their responsibilities. Represent the Chapter in the human resources community. Minimum time commitment per month: 3 hours.
Communications - Oversee the chapter's communications activities while maintaining a consistent brand image. Specifically, responsible for the chapter’s monthly newsletter, press releases and working with the media. Manages our Mail Chimp account. Prepare and maintain materials for all media outlets to publicize chapter projects, activities, upcoming meetings, as well professional information that is beneficial to the chapter members. Represent the Chapter in the human resources community. Minimum time commitment per month: 5 hours per month.
Social Media - Oversee the chapter's communications activities while maintaining a consistent brand image. Prepare and maintain content for all media outlets to publicize chapter projects, activities, upcoming meetings, as well professional information that is beneficial to the chapter members. Ensure the chapter has a strong presence on various social media outlets, including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Meetup. Represent the Chapter in the human resources community. Minimum time commitment per month: 3 hours per month.
Community Relations - Monitor and evaluate local community activities consistently. Plan community events to benefit the community. Manage the chapter’s outreach efforts in the community. Recommend community services projects the Chapter should support. Make chapter members aware of community organizations beneficial to HR professionals or businesses. Provide information to chapter members about local community organizations through flyers or brochures at meetings or via newsletter articles. Serve as a liaison to local community organizations. Represents the chapter in the human resources community. Minimum time commitment per month: 5-7 hours.
Governmental Affairs - Monitor and evaluate pending legislative, regulatory, and legal action at the federal, state, and local level, which may have an impact on the management of human resources. Present a monthly legislative report or update at Chapter meetings and/or in the newsletter. Work in close cooperation with the Virginia State Legislative Director and the national headquarters staff in carrying out these tasks. Attend the National Legislative Conference. Represent the Chapter in the human resources community. Minimum time commitment per month: 3-5 hours
Membership - Manage the membership function for the Chapter. Communicate with prospective and new members. Prepare new membership promotional material. Conduct new member orientation. Maintain the membership roster. Perform any other duties as appropriate in support of the membership activities of the Chapter. Manage the membership function to successfully achieve an 80% retention rate as well as maintain current membership numbers. Represents the Chapter in the human resources community. Minimum time commitment per month: 10 hours.
Military Liaison – Serve the needs of U.S. service-members and veterans at the intersection of the individual, the individual’s family, Human Resources, our businesses and our communities. Become a subject matter expert and resource for all parties regarding service-member and veteran issues. Through knowledge, networks, and skills create an environment of knowledgeable advocacy within the chapter, business community, and community at large with serving the needs of U.S. service-members’ and veterans’ as the primary goal. Minimum time commitment per month: 5 hours.
Programs – Plan the programs for the monthly chapter meetings, which includes the selection of topics and speakers, contacting and following up with speakers, preparing articles about the program for the monthly newsletter, and performing any other duties as appropriate in support of the program activities of the Chapter. Coordinate efforts with other Board members to provide the best offerings for the Chapter membership. Review final preparations for meetings to ensure that meetings run smoothly. Review program evaluations for feedback to be used in planning future events. Represent the Chapter in the human resources community. Minimum time commitment per month: 10-15 hours. Deputy Director of Programs – Assist Director of Programs with program logistics, including creating nametags and managing the registration desk on the day of the event and at our annual Employment Law and HR Summit. Assist with selecting topics and speakers, contacting and following up with speakers, preparing articles about the program for the monthly newsletter, and performing any other duties as appropriate in support of the program activities of the Chapter. Represent the Chapter in the human resources community. Minimum time commitment per month: 3-5 hours.
Summit Director - This position is the PWSHRM co-chair for our annual Employment Law and HR Summit Committee. The director will be responsible for keeping the committee on track, selecting speaker topics, getting credit approval from SHRM/HRCI, finding event space, getting a budget approved by the board, updating the board regularly on progress, assisting with sponsorship and communications, along with many other details. Ability to draft letters, flyers, PowerPoint slides, etc. Requires excellent communication and organizational skills. Minimum time commitment per month: 10-15 hours per month.
Sponsorship - Seeks out and solicits companies to sponsor SHRM related events. This includes the monthly meetings, the annual law summit and other special events. The Director will manage the contract process, payments, acquire slides and advertisements from the company sponsors, meet and greet sponsors at SHRM meetings and introduce sponsors to the Board and other PWSHRM members. Ability to draft letters, flyers, PowerPoint slides, etc. Requires excellent communication and organizational skills. This position is on the PWSHRM annual Law Summit Committee. Minimum time commitment per month: 3-5 hours.
Technology - Manage the chapter's technology programs including developing and maintaining the chapter's website and managing Google Apps for internal board collaboration and communication. Maintain an up to date email distribution roster of members and non- members for distribution of communication materials. Create, distribute, and maintain program surveys. Minimum time commitment per month: 10-15 hours per month.
Workforce Readiness – Develop and support workshops and seminars that address workforce readiness issues. Monitor and evaluate on a continuing basis local activities concerning workforce readiness issues and plans. Encourage chapter involvement and activities affecting the workforce readiness arena. Monitor local activities concerning workforce readiness and provide timely information on education issues to the board of directors and the state workforce readiness director. Works in cooperation with state-level workforce readiness advocates. Minimum time commitment per month: 3-5 hours.
