English IV- Advanced Placement Dual Credit Mrs. Beard Literature and Composition

Course Objectives: To provide students with the critical thinking skills required to understand the themes and the relevance of major works of literature, including selections from the major literary genres of long and short fiction, poetry and drama. The classroom emphasis will be on critically evaluating and appreciating literature-- its terminology, its ideas, its variety of styles, and its creators. Assignments will continue to improve the students’ writing skills and research practices.

Second six weeks: --Discuss writing: purpose, audience, organization, voice, tone, structure --Develop accurate and appropriate thesis and organizational skills for written assignments. --Review grammar and mechanics --Recognize the various literary approaches to a text --Analyze a text by implementing rhetorical and literary strategies --Engage in various strategies in preparation for the AP Literature and Composition Test --Engage in discussions exploring poetry, particularly the sonnet form

Hamlet, located in the Bedford, p. 1590 (I strongly recommend purchasing your own copy) Trifles, Susan Glaspell (Bedford) Teacher-selected poems (including Shakespeare’s sonnets)

October 3-7 Mon: Complete Act I of Hamlet; prepare a passage for class discussion that analyzes some aspect of character, conflict, theme, literary device, etc. Tues: Discuss the history of the Hamlet legend, return thesis/intros for Oedipus/Medea essay, begin analyzing character, theme. HW:Act II of Hamlet Wed and Thurs: Reading check, Acts I and II (formative); Continue discussion of Hamlet HW: read Shakespeare sonnets, pp. 1343-44, and those given in class. Fri: Read and analyze poems in class; Discuss the structure/types of sonnets HW: Act III of Hamlet

October 10-14 Mon: Student holiday Tues: Complete compare/contrast chart for sonnets; plagiarism video/honesty contract HW: Act IV of Hamlet, Check notes for “The Sonnet” (they have been updated) Wed/Thurs: Act III reading check (formative) Continue to analyze the play; Practice writing associative claims for poetry prompt; work on Medea/Oedipus Essays (bring your materials) EXTRA CREDIT MEMORY WORK TO BE DISCUSSED (handout available online) HW: Continue reading Hamlet; make sure your printer works. You have a paper due on Monday! Fri: Hamlet test (summative—Acts I, II + background)

Papers must be submitted to turnitin.com by 4pm. Papers not submitted by 4 pm will be counted one day late (-20). Hard copies are due at the beginning of class with the receipt stapled to the back of the essay. If you are on campus any part of the day, your paper is due.
