TO: NAESB Open Field Message Bus (OpenFMB) Task Force Participants and Interested Industry Participants FROM: Elizabeth Mallett, NAESB Deputy Director RE: NAESB OpenFMB Task Force Meeting Notes – June 12, 2015 DATE: June 19, 2015 Dear OpenFMB Task Force Participants, A conference call was held on June 12, 2015 to continue efforts to address request R14008 submitted by Duke Energy. The call took place from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm Central. Ms. Mallett served as counsel for the meeting. The notes below serve as the record for the meeting.

June 12, 2015 NAESB OpenFMB Task Force Conference Call

Administrative Mr. Zhou welcomed the participants and conducted the introductions over the phone. Ms. Mallett provided the Antitrust and Other Meeting Policies reminder. Mr. Zhou reviewed the agenda posted for the meeting. A review of previous meeting notes and a presentation from Mr. Lackey of possible nodes within a utility were added as agenda items. Mr. Lackey moved to adopt the revised draft agenda as final. The motion passed without opposition. The participants reviewed the meeting notes from May 1, 2015, May 15, 2015, and May 29, 2015. Mr. Laval was added to the participant list for the May 15, 2015 conference call. Mr. Lackey moved to adopt the revised meeting notes as final. The motion passed without opposition. Cade Burks, Big Data Energy Participants Jerry Fitzpatrick, NIST David Haynes, Aclara Shawn Hu, Xtensible Solutions LLC Larry Lackey, SGIP Stuart Laval, Duke Energy Terry Saxton, Xtensible Solutions LLC Jim Waight, OMNETRIC Corp. Joe Zhou, Ernst & Young LLP OpenFMB Task During the May 29, 2015 conference call, the task force assigned different sections of the Draft Force Update OpenFMB Specification to participants. Mr. Laval stated that although he has mainly concentrated on the node classification issues since that meeting, he did review the SGIP OpenFMB Use Cases with Mr. Hu and noted that all three use cases are nearing completion. Mr. Hu stated that he is updating the Use Case Model and reviewing the Data Model. Mr. Laval agreed to add the final SGIP Use Cases to the NAESB Open FMB website.

Draft OpenFMB The task force reviewed the Table of Contents in the Draft OpenFMB Specification. Mr. Zhou Specification suggested that the section for Data Distribution Service for Real-Time Systems (DDS), the section for Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT), and a section containing other reference implementation, be merged together into one section. He also noted that referring to a MQTT reference implementation in the draft Model Business Practices may cause confusion within the industry, as the implementation may not exist at this time. Mr. Zhou encouraged those participants with a section assigned to them to email Mr. Saxton with a first draft of their section. Mr. Lackey noted that defining the nodes may be necessary before the draft Model Business Practices can be effectively drafted.

Ms. Mallett encouraged the task force to read through the language in and examine the layout of the Model Business Practices in NAESB REQ.21 Energy Services Provider Interface (ESPI) Standard. The task force reviewed comments submitted by Southern Company on the Draft OpenFMB Specification. The specification was revised to incorporate the suggestions. The Draft OpenFMB Specification as revised during the meeting may be accessed at the following link: https://www.naesb.org/pdf4/retail_open_fmb061215a2.docx.

Node Mr. Lackey reviewed the Edge to Enterprise diagram with the participants. He stated that the Presentation document attempts to lay out physical items to keep in mind during the drafting of the Model Business Practices. He noted that the nodes may be embedded in a device or a separate physical item next to a device. Mr. Zhou stated that the diagram aids in the understanding of the type of nodes surrounding distribution device communications beyond the microgrid. Mr. Lackey will review an updated version of the diagram with the task force during the June 26, 2015 conference call.

Node Mr. Zhou reviewed the Draft Node Categories document with the participants. Mr. Laval Classification explained that traditional voltage regulators adjust voltage through reactive power and that the Discussion smart inverter can inject bars, but also curtail. Mr. Saxton stated that some of the devices should be able to forecast how much power they produce within a few hours. Mr. Zhou noted that the task force has yet to address advanced functions. Mr. Laval stated that the forecast may turn out to be latent data, but the function should be evaluated and will most likely fit into meter data. The task force determined that a new function should be added to address battery load. Mr. Saxton agreed to review the EPRI Smart Inverter Common Functions paper in order to update the function. Mr. Laval stated that it may help to go through each use case, list what they do, and then determine location. Mr. Zhou will review the resynchronization use case. Mr. Laval will review the islanding transition from grid to islanding use case. Mr. Waight will review the optimization use case. The Draft Node Categories document as modified during the meeting may be accessed at the following link: https://www.naesb.org/pdf4/retail_open_fmb061215a1.xlsx.

Industry The participants discussed reaching out to technical experts and other interested industry parties to Communication foster participation during future conference calls. & Participation
