Graduate Studies Committee Minutes of March 11, 2008

I. Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 2:03 p.m.

II. Approval of Minutes

Minutes of the February 12th meeting were approved.

III. Announcements

Hedy Carpenter announced that ten CSUN students have been selected for the CSU Research Symposium held on May 2-3, 2008 at CSU East Bay. She reported that there are four undergraduate students and six graduate students. Carpenter also announced that the deadline for the Graduate Student Awards is on March 21st, and leading environmentalist and social activist Paul Hawken will be giving a lecture on March 13th at 12:30 pm at the Performing Arts Center.

Gloria Roberts announced that the Fulbright Scholar Program Workshop for faculty would be held on April 18th from 10:00 am – 12 noon at the University Club.

IV. Curriculum Review

A. College of Arts, Media, and Communication

Communication Studies 1. Course modification proposal in COMS 698C-Thesis or Graduate Project to change current catalog course description and change requisites was approved.

New course proposal in COMS 601-Core Seminar in Communication Research Methods was approved with the following caveats:  Edit the first sentence in Item #12 since the department is proposing a new course not a program modification.  Edit the sentence in Item #13 because it indicates that the course is an introduction as a graduate level to offer introductory material, which contradicts the graduate level work.  SLOs in Item #14 need to be revised because they were vague and brief. Also, the course SLOs can be linked back to the program SLOs, but for the specific course state how that course is going to fulfill those SLOs.

3. Program modification proposal to change program requirements by adding methods and area requirements for the M.A. in Communication Studies was approved.

Theatre 1. Course modification proposals in TH 422-Theatre and Drama of Greece and Rome, TH 423-Theatre and Drama of Middle Ages and Renaissance, TH 424-Theatre and Drama of 18th and 19th Century, TH 425-Theatre and Drama of Europe from Naturalism to the Mid-20th Century, TH 426-Contemporary Theatre and Drama of Europe and America, TH 427-History of Costume, TH 432-Theatre and Drama of the United States, TH 433-The Musical Theatre in the United States, TH 475-Theatre and Drama for Young Audiences, TH 530- Theatre and Drama of Latin America, TH 531-Theatre and Drama of Asia, and TH 535-Theatrical Theory and Criticism to change current catalog course description and change requisites were approved with the following caveat:  Write a statement to describe the difference in expectations of graduates and undergraduates for all 400 level courses that are offered to both for all the course modifications for Theatre.

B. College of Health and Human Development

Health Sciences 1. Program modification proposal to change program requirements by increasing the Master’s Thesis/Project to 3 units in the M.P.H. program was approved.

C. College of Humanities

Linguistics 1. New course proposal in LING 555-TESL Classroom Practices in Post- Secondary Academic Settings was approved.

New course proposals in HUMA 501-Gateway to the Humanities, HUMA 510-The Sacred, HUMA 520-The Self: Body and Mind, HUMA 530-Family and Life Cycle, HUMA 600-Identity, Meaning, and Culture, HUMA 610- Space, Place and Geography: Mental Mapping, HUMA 620-Science and Magic, HUMA 630-Nation and Empire, Law and Government, HUMA 640- Norms and Knowledge, HUMA 650-Capstone: The Good Life, HUMA 697- Directed Comprehensive Studies, and HUMA 699-Graduate Independent Study were approved.

2. New program proposal for the M.A. in Humanities was approved.

D. College of Social and Behavioral Sciences

Psychology 1. New certificate program proposal for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst Program was approved with the following caveat:  Revise the wording within the new program proposal attachment.

2. New course proposals in PSY 551A-Becoming a BCBA: Professional and Certification Issues, PSY 551B-Becoming a BCBA: Taking the Exam, PSY 552-Principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, PSY 553-Measurement and Experimental Evaluation of Behavior, PSY 555-Applications and Ethics in Applied Behavior Analysis, PSY 557-Behavior Change Procedures and Systems Support, PSY 558A-Geriatric Health Psychology: Selected Issues, PSY 558B-Geriatric Sexual Health: Selected Issues, and PSY 558C-Geriatric Relational Health: Selected Issues were approved with the following caveat:  Add a bibliography for PSY 558.

Social Work 1. Program modification proposal to change program requirements so that SWRK 603 is a required course in the M.S.W. program was approved with the following caveat:  Change the units under the Proposed Catalog section of proposal for the Foundation Year and the Advanced Concentration Year.
