TITLE: Return to work after illness
PURPOSE: To ensure a healthy, disease free workforce and to decrease the number of nosocomial infections.
POLICY: To assure that employees are able to return to work and are no longer contagious when a communicable illness or disease is reported. (See list below)
PROCEDURE:
A. In Coordination with Policy #170.1010 Employees reporting a potentially communicable or diagnosed communicable disease (refer to Addendum A below) or absent as a result of a short-term illness of 3 or more scheduled shifts:
1. The employee will be required to report a potential or diagnosed communicable or infectious disease to the Employee Health Nurse regardless if there were scheduled shifts absent or not. 2. Upon returning to work from a reported potentially or diagnosed communicable or infectious disease, the employee will be required to see the Employee Health Nurse before the first shift worked if required per the Occupational Health policy "Workability of Employees with Communicable and Infectious Diseases". Depending on the illness, the employee may or may not be presenting a return to work statement from an attending health care provider.
3. If in the opinion of the Employee Health Nurse, the employee should not return to work, the employee will be relieved and requested to return to work with a statement from an attending health care provider.
4. The employee will be required to see the Employee Health Nurse and present a return to work statement from the attending health care provider before the first shift worked following the absence.

1. Communicable diseases in healthcare workers, as listed in Addendum A, will be reported within 24 hours of knowledge, or suspicion, by the Employee Health Office to the Infection Control Office
2. The Employee Health Office will record absences as a result of a communicable disease. A report and summary is available sorted by disease or diagnosis providing the number of employees absent, the departments involved, and the length of absences
