What Kind of a Globe Would You Make? Draw It in the Box

Maggie’s Activity Pack

Name ______

Cool Art

Many years ago people made globes. These are part of the “Cool Globes” exhibit. The globes showed how people could stop the Earth from getting too warm. One of the ideas is to wash clothes in cold water. Another idea is to plant trees. Here is one of the globes. It tells people that they can unplug things like toasters when they are not being used.

This globe is named the Green Your Home Globe. It was made by Luz Maria Castillo.

Dear Colleague, We often offer a few cultural arts activities each year. When we visited Battery Park in New York City last year, we knew these globes would be a wonderful topic for this offering. You could even have an ongoing paper mache project in your room for children to work on after other work is complete. This is always motivating! Children could create their own globe or you might have one

The globe project is a valuable way to show children how science integrates with many different subject areas. There is a connection between science fiction and current tools such as cell phones. I was reminded of this when browsing through a few fantasy and science fiction books. These are other genres that are popular with our students. Classics such as the wonderful Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne give children a sense of the characteristics of these genres. Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak is another emerging reader popular book from the fantasy genre. As children read this book, be sure to scaffold questions to help them discover that the further max goes into his fantast world, the bigger the pictures become. When he is in his own room, the pictures are small. Talk about a BIG imagination! Children can read books like these and explain what makes this literature a part of a specific genre. Then encourage them to find other books that fit the definition. This is part of learning how our world is connected. Ideas from literature and science can come to life. And as our activity shows, art can help educate the world about key scientific concepts. Happy teaching, Dr. Kathy

Goals: Children will read about the globes from the “Cool Globes” exhibit. This shows how art and science can be integrated to educate people. A follow-up activity encourages children to design and write about their own globe. This activity is also available on the primary and intermediate levels. It is part of our cultural arts offering.
