Lesson title: ____Feasts in the Arab World______

Step 1—Desired Results Standard Outcomes for Learning (ACTFL Standard 1.1)—Answer’s the question, what should students know, understand, and be able to do as a result of the lesson?

By the end of this lesson Students will be able to do - Say and write names of five feasts in Arabic. - Scan a text quickly to answer questions from the context. - Write short sentences to describe what happens in each feast. - Use the symbols of each feast to design a caricature.

Step 2—Assessment Evidence Performance task—What will students do to show what they have learned?

1- Repeating and writing the names of the feasts in Arabic. 2- Connect the names of the feasts with the symbols associated with them. 3- Read a text quickly to find answers. 4- Design a caricature about your favorite feast.

Step 3—Learning Plan Learning activities - Answer’s the question, how do I teach it?

- First I asked the students to tell me about their favorite feast in America and what they usually do in this special occasion. - The next step was to show students some photos from some of the feasts in the Arab world and ask the students to try to guess what is happening in the photos and what is this special occasion about. - Then I showed them a video about the Spring celebration in Egypt "Sham El Naseem" and the traditions associated with this feast as well as the special food eaten on that day and the activities that most people like to do in this occasion. - After that I gave them a short text about feasts and special occasions in the Arab world and asked them to work in pairs to skim the text quickly to find the names of the feasts and answer questions. - After that students worked individually to match the names of the feasts with photos of symbols associated with the feast such as (lanterns with Ramadan – colored eggs with Sham El Naseem – lambs with the feast of sacrifice etc). - The last step is to give each student a piece of paper and some coloring pens and ask them to use the symbols and new vocabulary they have learnt to design a caricature about their favorite feast in the Arab world

Step 4—Reflection What happened during my lesson? What did my students learn? How do I know? What did I learn? How will I improve my lesson next time?

- The students were very surprised to see some similarities between some feasts in the Arab world and in the USA such as coloring eggs in Sham El Naseem (the spring festival). - They were very happy to be able to design caricatures about their favorite feast.
