ANIMAL Public Service Announcement!

Assignment: In pairs or trios, create a Public Service Announcement/Commercial that tries to drum up public support for solving a problem concerning animal species somewhere on Earth. Each partnership/group will be assigned one of the following categories to work on: Endangered Species, Threatened Species, Extinct Species or Invasive Species. You will also be assigned a continent to focus your animal search in. This will ensure that as a class, we’ll span the whole globe and learn about species we have never heard of before. Once you have chosen an animal, you will sign up for it in class- no APES class will have two groups working on the same animal. THREE Multiple choice questions (include answers!) are to be emailed to me from one person in each group for a student-made quiz on the animals presented.
Project Format: Can be visual recording, audio recording, or live skit, but all group members must be in the performance. Feel free to get your friends/family involved also! No matter what your target audience is, your announcement must be INFORMATIVE and ENTERTAINING. Creativity is key! Think outside the box! Make it interesting so people want to watch/listen to it. More “Bill Nye”, less “Ms. Zornow :o)”. Alternative formats must be pre-approved by Ms. Zornow. You will present your project to the class as part of your grade. You must have your project on a flash drive or disk on the date it is due- no “computer” malfunctions will be accepted :o( Must Haves for ALL Projects: Name of species (common and scientific) Illustration / Picture of species Description of species (place of origin, size, reproduction, etc) Habitat (preferred abiotic conditions/limiting factors) Niche of species (producer, primary consumer, etc.) Description of the problem (extinction, endangered, threatened, invasive) Specific to Extinct Species o How it happened / what caused it o Importance of species (environmental and/or economic) Specific to Endangered or Threatened Species o Current status of your species (Endangered/Threatened) and when was it placed on the Endangered/Threatened list o Reason species is in trouble o Current estimation of species population size in key areas o Importance of species (environmental and/or economic) . e.g. it is an important producer in its ecosystem; used to produce cancer medicine o How this problem is affecting biodiversity o What can be done to fix the problem Specific to Invasive Species o How it happened / what caused it o How & where this species is currently causing “trouble” o How this problem is affecting biodiversity in the invaded ecosystem o How does this species affect the economy of the new area o What can be done to fix the problem
