SUPERINTENDENT’S NEWSLETTER MAY, 2012 The mission of the Northeast Community School District is to educate students to become resourceful learners and contributing citizens.

There will be a two-hour early dismissal on Wednesday, May 2. Friday, May 18, is the last day of school for students at Northeast, and classes will be dismissed at the regular time.

Board of Education meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 P.M. in the elementary library unless otherwise announced. A special meeting of the Board will be held on May 8, and the regular May meeting will be held on May 16. Visitors are always welcome.

Commencement for the 2011 graduates will be held in the Northeast High School gym at 1:45 P.M. on Sunday, May 13. Congratulations! Senior Awards Night, an evening program which honors and rewards seniors for their accomplishments and efforts during high school, will be held Wednesday, May 9, at 7:00 P.M. in the Fine Arts Auditorium. A list of graduates is attached.

MEMORIAL DAY, MAY 28, 2012 Teacher and Staff Recognition Week will be observed at Northeast May 7-11, 2012.

School Board Recognition Week will be observed at Northeast May 6- 12, 2012.

CONGRATULATIONS TO . . . . .  the following art students whose work was chosen for the Big East Traveling Art Show: McKenzie Edwards, Austin Cooper, Kaitlynn Riley, Caley Jacobsen, and Kaylee Costello. The show was on display at Northeast recently.  art students who participated at Clinton Community College’s 2012 High School Fine Arts Day on Friday, April 13: Austin Cooper, Emily Horst, Sara Smith, Kaylee Costello, McKenzie Edwards, Reah Escobedo, Caley Jacobsen, Shelby Roling, Brittany Dague, Kristen Rice, and Isacc Reuch. Sara Smith took first place in drawing, Shelby Roling took first place in mixed medium, Caley Jacobsen won both second and third place in the painting category, and Brittany Dague won an honorable mention in pastel. Northeast also won the coveted pizza box sculpture contest with this year’s entry “Girangaroo”. In addition, Isaac Ruesch took home a new bag and hat in the lottery drawing.  students who competed in the Battle of the Books finals in Marshalltown recently: Sarah Myers, Jacob House, Shannon Christiansen, Elizabeth Carstensen, and Mackenzie Cherek.  the girls’ and boys’ track and soccer teams for their great seasons! Keep up the good work!  Northeast’s FBLA Chapter which was recognized as a whole for the Iowa Merit Award and received 3rd place in the Event Scholarship. Nineteen members of the Future Business Leaders of America and their advisor, Amanda Eberhart, attended the Iowa FBLA State Leadership Conference on March 29-31 at the Marriott in Coralville. Individual winners in the competition include: Nathan Kloft (2nd - Salesmanship Presentation); Shelby Bormann and Taylor Sullivan (3rd - Desktop Publishing); Heaven Baker and Nick Kilburg (4th - Entrepreneurship); Shelby Bormann (4th – Word Processing II). Nathan Kloft will compete at the FBLA National Leadership Conference in San Antonio, TX, in the Help Desk event, and Madalynn Meier and Josie Hennings will compete in open events at Nationals. Emily Bray, a Northeast freshman, was elected as a new state officer and will attend State Officer Training in Des Moines in June, will serve as the 2012-13 Iowa FBLA State Reporter, and will also represent Northeast at Nationals. The FBLA is a national career and technical student organization whose mission is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development program. WHAT’S HAPPENING AT NORTHEAST? The middle school Instrumental and Vocal Spring Concert begins at 5:30 P.M., and the high school Instrumental and Vocal Spring Concert begins at 7:30 P.M. in the auditorium on Tuesday, May 1. Don’t miss the Art Show on display in the auditorium hall area during/between the performances. Elementary students and staff members will participate in “Go the Distance”, a state-wide walk stressing the importance of physical fitness, on Friday, May 4, at 8:30 A.M. Community members and parents are invited to participate if they wish. The K-6 Track & Field Day will be held Friday, May 4. Relay events will be in the morning, and field events will be in the afternoon. The rain date is Monday, May 7. Parents are invited to attend all events. The 5th and 6th grade students will present a spring music program, Pirates, the Musical, on Thursday, May 10, at 1:30 and 7:00 P.M. at the high school. The public is welcome, and admission is free. Please join us for this entertaining production in the Fine Arts Auditorium.
