BEST SINGLE PROFESSIONAL RESOURCE
Reading for Understanding Toward an R & D Program in Reading Comprehension Rand Study Group Catherine Snow, Chair Prepared for the Office of Educational Research and Improvement RAND 1700 Main Street, P.O. Box 2138 Santa Monica, CA 90407-2138 [email protected] ISBN 0-8330-3105-8 Copyright 2002
This book is also available from the IRA and costs about $20.00. If you need a reference that gives a complete overview of the issues and needs in reading, this is a terrific book. The contents of the book are research-based and address reading comprehension in all schools, including high school. If you want information to use in establishing or maintaining a program, this book has the statistics and research that you will need to back up your request. If you don't know much about reading instruction and want a thorough introduction to teaching reading, this is an excellent place to begin. The book is widely acknowledged as the best source of information in print today.
GREAT BLACKLINE MASTERS For each of the following resources, you can buy the masters and then make copies to your heart's content for your own classroom.
Scholastic: 24 Nonfiction Passages for Test Practice by Michael Priestley Scholastic Professional Books 2931 East McCarty Street Jefferson City, MO 65102 www.hammetts.com
I bought two of these. Level 4-5 has an ISBN of 0-439-25609-7 and Level 6-8 has an ISBN of 0-439-25610-0. They cost $8.95 each where I bought them. You get nonfiction passages that are followed by anywhere from 3-8 questions. I purchased these at Classroom Connections, but the parent company is Hammetts so I have given you their web address. Teaching Reading in the Content Areas: If Not Me, Then Who? Blackline Masters – 2nd Edition by Rachel Billmeyer, Ph.D. and Mary Lee Barton, M.Ed. McRel 2550 S. Parker Road, Suite 500 Aurora Colorado 80014 I ordered this from ASCD for $15.00 (#397259; matching textbook #397258 for $27.95) 1-800-933-2723 or www.ascd.org
For $15.00 this may the best buy you can possibly make of all the materials listed in this document. The packet contains almost 90 blackline masters of graphic organizers and teaching strategies that could apply to most content areas. Sections include Vocabulary Development Strategies, Narrative Text Strategies, Informational Text Strategies, and Reflection Strategies. The authors have also included an Appendix and Bibliography of useful titles.
Three books go along with this: Teaching Reading in the Content Areas: If not me, then who? 2nd Edition by Rachel Billmeyer, and Mary Lee Barton McRel 2002 ISBN 1-893476-05-7 ASCD Stock Number 397258 - $27.95

Time for Kids Nonfiction Comprehension Test Practice by Andrea Trischitta Teacher Created Materials, Inc 6421 Industry Way Westminster, CA 92683 www.teachercreated.com www.hammetts.com
These come in levels 2 to 6, and the levels are roughly equivalent to grade equivalency. The books are wonderful in that they focus on comprehension first at a sentence level, then at a paragraph level, and finally at a whole text level. The books have multiple choice tests as well as graphic organizers and enrichments. They coordinate perfectly with the texts listed next. I paid $14.99 for volume 5, ISBN 0-7439-3512-8.

Time for Kids Comprehension and Critical Thinking by Sarah Kartchner Clark
Almost all of the passages in this book match up with the text at the same level listed above. This book carries the questioning out to a critical level, so there is no duplication with the other text. If you want to work first on basic comprehension and then critical comprehension, this is a great pair of books. I paid $12.99 each for Level 5 (ISBN 0-7439-3375-3) and Level 6 (ISBN 0- 7439-3376-1)
TEXTBOOK MATERIALS FOR USE WITH STUDENTS
College Study Skills by James F. Shepherd Houghton Mifflin Company 1994 ISBN 0-395-67581-2
This text is an excellent source of study skills and general tips about being successful in school. One of the best chapters is about doing well on tests. Even though this book is labeled college level, it is very appropriate for high school kids.
Efficient Reading by James I. Brown and Vivian V. Fishco D. C. Heath and Company – Lexington, Massachusetts 1993 ISBN 0-669-29758-5 (I ended up calling the college division at 1-800-733-1717 to get a copy of this book. The only copy I could find is an old seventh edition; I think the newest one is the eighth, published in 1999.) The book was written by a U of M professor and focuses on increasing rate and comprehension in nonfiction as well as on vocabulary development. The selections are rated by Flesch Reading Ease score and rank from easy to very difficult. This book is appropriate for the best kids (I use it in Reading for College). The book is organized by thematic chapters containing sets of articles that represent all different reading levels.
The Elements of Clear Thinking Series by William F. McCart Educators Publishing Service, Inc. 31 Smith Place Cambridge, MA 02138-1000 1.800.225.5750 or www.epsbooks.com
Critical Reading – 1994 – ISBN 0-8388-5168-4 Sound Reasoning – 1997 – ISBN 0-8388-5169-2 Accurate Communication – 1997 – ISBN 0-8388-0167-6
3 Reading Resource List – Barrett Page 4
These three publications are short, workbook-style books that are suitable for teaching critical reading strategies in grades 9 to 12. They contain examples of a variety of types of text, and questions that follow focus student attention on all aspects of the writing. The books range in price from $8.30 to $11.70; the answer keys are priced separately. I would recommend that you buy all three though Sound Reasoning focuses on logic of reasoning. If you visit the website at www.epsbooks.com you can view sample pages of Critical Reading and Accurate Communication.
Passing the Minnesota Basic Standards Test in Reading By Dr. Frank Pintozzi and Devon Pintozzi American Book Company PO Box 2638 Woodstock, Georgia 30188-1383 1-888-264-5877 Copyright 1999
This book was specifically designed for helping Minnesota students pass the BST. It begins with test taking tips and a diagnostic reading test. Then you have 5 chapters (finding main idea, reading for details, patterns of ideas, and word meaning; inferences, conclusions, generalizations, and predictions; fact and opinion; and author's perspective. In each chapter you have articles followed by sample test items. The format and layout match the BST exactly, and that can help kids with test anxiety.
Reader's Handbook: Middle School by Laura Robb, Ron Klemp, Wendell Schwartz Great Source Education Group – A Houghton Mifflin Company ISBN 0-669-48857-7 Copyright 2002 800-289-4490
Reader's Handbook: Grade 4-5 ISBN 0-669-49009-1 Reader's Handbook: High School ISBN 0-669-49006-7
This book is an excellent text for middle school/junior high school students. It contains chapters on the reading process, reading textbooks, reading nonfiction, reading fiction, reading poetry, reading drama, reading on the internet, reading graphics, reading for tests, and improving vocabulary. The book is user-friendly and contains highlighting and margin notes to help students focus on the text being discussed. Plenty of activities and practices are included in the book, and there is an accompanying student applications book full of graphic organizers and practice articles. You can also purchase beautifully done overheads to use with your classes.
Versions for upper elementary and high school are also now available. Contact Jane Dalrymple ate [email protected] or 800-289-4490 (option 4).

Reading Thresholds by Carolyn Fitzpatrick and Marybeth R. Ruscica D.C. Heath and Company – Lexington, Massachusetts 1993 ISBN 0-66902907-0
This book is a great source of materials for a developmental reading course, especially for courses with students who have not passed the basic standards test. Three of the best chapters are on main idea, details, and organization. The chapter I use most is the one on critical reading.

The site includes pre-teaching and post-teaching materials. The Star Tribune has announced that they will not maintain the site after this year, so download and print out the pages you like. www.themoonlitroad.com This web site has short stories that you can read or listen to, lots of support materials, and beautiful graphics. Most of the stories are eerie; the ones I previewed I think kids would love.
FREE BROCHURES
Put Reading First: The Research Building Blocks for Teaching Children to Read Kindergarten Through Grade 3 This is a brochure of about 60 pages that gives an overview of all the research done regarding beginning reading instruction. It was created by the National Institute for Literacy, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and the US Department of Education.
Put Reading First: Helping your Child Learn to Read – A Parent Guide This is a 4-panel color brochure intended to be given to parents. It is glossy, beautiful, and simple enough for parents to actually use. Again, you can order as many as you think you’ll need.

With a Heads Up from Sheila Bennett in Roseville: I agree that this is an excellent resource! Even though its focus is K-3, much of the information is important for grade 4-6 teachers to know too. A caution about sending it out without discussion, however: Many reading professionals take serious exception to the statements/conclusions regarding the importance of providing extended independent reading time in school (pages 25 and 29). We felt that those conclusions were potentially very destructive and ran counter to what we have been emphasizing about increasing the amount of reading time for all students as an essential part of our total reading program. Therefore, I prepared a kind of rebuttal statement, summarizing the findings of other types of research (especially well summarized by Richard Allington) regarding the crucial importance of independent reading time, which we handed out and discussed along with these booklets. Just a heads up I thought I'd share!
