Cultural Competency with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community

Program Description This course is designed to support and build upon January 29, 2016 the Alliance Cultural Competency Plan. The Alliance Cultural Competency Plan has two goals: 10:00 am to 12:00 pm 1) to foster cultural competency within the 4600 Emperor Blvd., Durham, NC Alliance Organization; and 2) to nurture and guide cultural competency in the provider network. This course is designed to promote agency awareness and accountability in serving the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community. It is essential for every provider to have a Linguistic competency objective that will enable each provider to meet the diverse needs of persons with limited English proficiency and the need for a licensed Sign Language Interpreter. This course is designed to equip each participant with the tools and knowledge to become effective advocates for Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons affected by mental illness, developmental disabilities, and substance abuse. Speaker Sherry Bridges is a graduate of Gardner-Webb University with a Bachelors of Arts in Deaf Studies, where she headed the American Sign Language learning labs on campus. Sherry also worked as a freelance interpreter for seven years in North Carolina. Throughout her interpreting career, she has had many opportunities to advocate with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing especially when their needs were not being met based on their deafness. Sherry works at RHA Behavioral Health Services, Inc. as an Outreach Coordinator and Consultant. Her major role, along with advocacy, is to provide trainings for agencies and corporations to consult them on how to meet the needs of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. She is committed to making a difference in the lives of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. She believes that effective advocacy gives the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community a voice, and with that voice systemic change can take place making agencies and companies more aware of the common discrimination the Deaf and Hard and Hearing community endures.
