S. Florida Inventor Develops Innovative Solution to Protect People From Anthrax, Other Harmful Contents Sent Through the Mail

BIOSAFE MAIL provides secure, sealed environment for opening letters and packages

WESTON, FL: The recent anthrax scare in our country has forced everyone to think twice before opening mail. Now there’s a new product available designed to give people peace of mind and prevent the types of business and government interruptions happening in our country practically every day.

BIOSAFE MAIL is an air tight, 5-pound, polycarbonate box, with attached industrial grade gloves, that provides a barrier between mail and the person opening it. The product was conceived and designed by Gerry Calabrese, who creates high-end, customized aquariums for a living, and holds several patents in the marine-life industry.

“I’m as concerned as everyone else about what’s going on in our country,” Calabrese said. “I felt there had to be way to offer protection. The creation of BIOSAFE MAIL was really just an idea that grew out of the work I do on a daily basis which is containing chemicals in air/water tight boxes for marine life.”

Made of unbreakable plastic, BIOSAFE MAIL is modeled after laboratory boxes created for handling hazardous material. It is a self-contained unit with a battery operated light and letter opener attached inside. The polyvinyl chloride sides and lid create a seal once the mail has been placed inside the box through a locked top. The mail is then opened via chemical-resistant gloves attached from the outside, with an automatic letter opener, creating a clean slice of the envelope. The contents can be examined before removing. If anything is suspicious, it remains safely sealed within the box until proper authorities are notified.

Calabrese says the BIOSAFE MAIL can be customized for individual home use, or designed for major mailrooms, with multiple gloves and openers and adequate space for moderate-sized packages “The simplicity of the design is matched completely by its effectiveness,” said Calabrese. “No one comes in contact with any dangerous substance sent through the mail using this device.”

---more--- Calabrese earned a degree from Embry Riddle Aeronautics University, specializing in aircraft maintenance technology. His experience with the airlines, as well as with Federal Express, has given him insight into the need for precaution when handling packages and envelopes.
