About the Faculty and its Mission and Strategy Faculty of Medicine and Health

With more than 6,000 students, 1,600 staff and an annual research income of almost £50m, the Faculty of Medicine and Health at Leeds is by itself bigger than some universities. The most recent Research Assessment Exercise acknowledged us as a world-leader in cancer, cardiovascular, psychiatric, genetic, musculo-skeletal and health services research.

Treatments developed in Leeds are transforming the lives of people around the world living with conditions such as HIV, TB, diabetes and malaria. The University is home to the National Institute for Health Research's Clinical Research Network Coordinating Centre. Our staff works very closely with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals National Health Service Trust. The Leeds General Infirmary is directly attached to the University campus and the Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine is based at St James's University Hospital about 2km away. We value highly our work with the city region, councils, public health organisations, health charities, industry and academic collaborators elsewhere in the UK and around the world.

The Faculty consists of four Schools:

. School of Healthcare . School of Medicine . School of Dentistry . School of Psychological Sciences

Find out more about the Faculty here

Research Overview The School of Healthcare, alongside the Faculty of Medicine & Health is committed to undertaking world-class research which makes a significant impact internationally, supports the needs of the local and national health economy and contributes to the provision of high quality research oriented student education. The School performed well against other comparable institutions in the 2014 REF with 91% of our activity rated as 3 or 4*.

To achieve our strategic aim we require additional research capacity and capability and have identified considerable potential in Social Work. Through influential leadership, the Investment Chair / Associate Professor will lead colleagues in Social Work to transform research activity into research strength. The strategic appointment of the Chair / Associate Prof will contribute to the School realising its vision of establishing itself as an internationally recognised centre of excellence in applied health and social care research, education and innovation.

The post will build on the School’s existing relationships with key partners such as Local Authority Councils, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT), and World University Network (WUN) partners. The appointment will not only allow the School to maximise on these opportunities but build on the potential it has by providing the required leadership to develop research excellence in key student education areas, strengthening the research-led student education portfolio.

Our research is characterised by its strong scientific base; inter-disciplinarity; wide range of methods; stakeholder involvement; local, national and international collaborations; relevance to policy and practice; and effective knowledge transfer. We have had success in winning funding from diverse sources including the ESRC, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, British Academy, Big Lottery, NHS/NIHR R&D programmes, Wellcome Foundation, Department of Health, and medical charities amongst others. Our research strengths have recently been refreshed to the topic based research programs of Decision Making, Medicines Management, Mental Health, Maternal health, Child Health, Pain Management and Wound Management. Methodological Development is a cross cutting program that intersects each of the topic based research programs.

We currently have ≈40 students registered for PhD study in the School of Healthcare on full and part-time routes. These students have access to a dedicated PhD suite in the Baines Wing, and their own research and training budget. Students are studying part-time, full-time, or on a split-site basis, whereby international students have a host institution overseas and are registered with the University of Leeds. Our students are from the UK, and further afield, such as Spain, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria and Uganda. Staff in the School also supervise PhD students with colleagues across the University (e.g. Psychology, Clinical Trials Research Unit, School of Medicine, and Mechanical Engineering).

Student Experience and Education Overview The School of Healthcare currently provides education for those working in Social Work, Nursing (adult, children’s and mental health), Midwifery, Counselling and Psychotherapy, Healthcare Scientists (Audiology and Cardiology), Pharmacy and Diagnostic Radiography. We offer a high quality student experience because of the scope of programmes we offer and the opportunity for interdisciplinary education. The University of Leeds, as a member of the Russell Group, delivers research-led teaching and hence a world leading, high quality, student experience. Chairs would be expected to contribute to research-led teaching across undergraduate pre- registration programmes and post graduate programmes across the School. In leading their own research programme, Chairs, together with colleagues, would communicate research to underpin undergraduate and post graduate programmes, contribute to the curriculum, raise the visibility of our research programmes for students, making the benefits of their research led experience and support the development of students’ independent research skills. All of these activities would enable us to effectively integrate education and research to enrich the student experience; a key University and School objective.

International Profile and Initiatives The School of Healthcare is presently in the process of strengthening its links with international partners. As part of the WUN, the university offers opportunities to form research links with prestigious universities. Presently, there are active research links with Queen’s University in Canada, Yale and Harvard Universities in the United States of America and the University of Sydney in Australia.

The School welcomes visitors from across the world and supports staff to undertake exchanges with partner universities both through the ERASMUS programme and as part of the WUN network. Staff from the School regularly present scholarly papers at International Conferences and co-author papers in peer reviewed journals with academic partners.
